BECKER — Running to the green together after the final putt on Hole 18, the Dawson-Boyd girls golf team and senior Lindsey Lund defended their team and individual title, and repeat as the Class A 2025 state champions after two days of competition. The Blackjacks earned first place with a 669, while Lund shot a meet-low 152.
“We’re all feeling super excited. When Lindsey came in [off the final hole], it just felt so, so real,” junior Alyssa Swedzinski said. “It’s fun to do it back-to-back for another time. All of these memories … We’re really close as a team. We all know each other, we have fun, which I think also helps [in competition], just knowing that we got each other’s backs.”
Dawson-Boyd put itself in strong position after round one with a 338, 10 strokes ahead of Park Christian’s second-place 348. The Falcons were runners-up with a 687.
The Blackjacks shared the state title last year, the program’s first in school history, with Fillmore Central with a 652 after the second round was shortened to 16 holes due to rain. They shot a 350 the first day and 302 in round two.
“This is pretty amazing. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and it’s a different feel this year, because last year we didn’t really get to celebrate [due to a delay in scoring for weather suspension],” Dawson-Boyd head coach Cory Larson said. “I think it’s more emotional this year … There was a lot of pressure on the girls. Not only coming into the state tournament, but coming into day two up 10 shots … They played really, really well down the stretch … So proud. They deserve it.”
This time around, Dawson-Boyd shot a 338 on Tuesday, and 331 in round two.
Lund, the team’s lone senior, leaves the program now as a two-time team and individual champion.
“I think being able to go out with a double blue [ribbon, given to state medalists], there’s no better feeling,” Lund said. “I came to play today and I did my best, and it’s an amazing feeling … Just being able to take that step back and forgetting about the last shot [helped]. Like bogeys are OK, they’re not going to be perfect all the time. That really helped me [with] believing in myself.”
Lund carded 6-over 78 with 12 pars in round one, shooting a 39 on the front and back 9, and was ahead of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City’s Brooke Brekke by one stroke. She wrapped up the meet and secured first place after a 2-over 74 with a trio of birdies and met par 11 times, and was five strokes ahead of runner-up Paige Beyer from Border West.
“She [Lund] has definitely left a mark at Dawson-Boyd overall, and certainly as a golfer,” Larson said. “To get a medal last year, being an individual and team state champion, and then repeat, that’s not easy. It’s very, very difficult. She handled the pressure like a champion … She’s definitely been a great leader and great mentor to all these girls.”
Lund will bring her golfing career to the collegiate level, and has committed to Winona State University to play.
Last year, Lund won the title by one stroke over BOLD’s Kenna Henriksen with a 147. She shot an 80 in round one and 67 in the final.
“It’s definitely emotional leaving everyone. They’re some of my best friends. High school golf has given me everything I could ask for and even more,” Lund said. “I’ve really been blessed with the teammates I’ve had, with the coaches I’ve had, and with the people around me. I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Swedzinski finished in seventh place with a 169 after carding an 88 in round one and an 81 on Wednesday. She met a total of 13 pars throughout the two days.
“Winning a state championship is like a premium on your to-do list,” Swedzinski said. “I get to do it with my mom [Darla Swedzinski], who is the assistant coach, and doing it with coach Larson makes it all the better.”
Freshman Kylar Hjelmeland came in 12th place with a 173, shooting an 88 and 85 respectively. She had a birdie on Hole 4 on Tuesday and finished with 14 pars.
Claire Stratmoen and Laura Schreier rounded out Dawson-Boyd in 21st and 46th, scoring a 177 and 194.
Larson has now led Dawson-Boyd to two consecutive golf state titles, and also coached the boys basketball team to its first title in March, marking three state championships in the past year.
“I feel extremely blessed, because both of those groups [golf and basketball] had a lot of talented, passionate players, and that’s what it takes,” Larson said. “I was fortunate to coach some of the maybe best couple of the Class A basketball players and I got to coach the best Class A golfers. It’s a testament to their hard work … I am just super, super fortunate to be a part of that.”
