Anderson, Staab lead area athletes at Day 1 of state track meet
ST. MICHAEL — Cayden Anderson and Jackson Staab each earned medals in the shot put finals on the first day of the state track and field meet on Tuesday. While the majority of the Class A events were preliminaries, the Section 3A duo took home some hardware to highlight the day’s events.
Anderson threw a distance of 55-08.25 in the shot put, finishing as the runner-up to Blooming Prairie’s Owen Krueger at 55-10.25. Staab, a junior, was the top non-senior in the event, placing third at 55-01.
Lakeview also earned medals in the wheelchair shot put, with freshman Broden Stensrud and junior Terrek Jenniges putting together the top two performances in the event at 18-10 and 17-08, respectively.
Brayson Boike, the reigning state champion in the triple jump, placed 10th in the event this year. He jumped a distance of 45-03.25 last season to earn his state title, but finished this year at 43-00. Osakis’ Trenton VanNyhuis, the runner-up last season, won the event this time around at 45-03.5.
For Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, Aidan Swenhaugen competed in the 100- and 200-meter preliminaries. He placed 17th in the former at 11.57 and 14th in the latter at 22.62. Cade Swenhaugen also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, placing 12th at 15.72. Neither qualified for today’s finals.
On the girls side, Canby/Minneota had a pair of relay teams that finished 10th, leaving them one slot shy of qualifying for today’s finals. The 4×200-meter relay team of Jordyn Jostock, Natalie Stoks, Brynn Kockelman and Taylor Ourada clocked in at 1:46.36 while the 4×400-meter relay team of Jostock, Ourada, Kockelman and Claire Stoks finished at 4:07.83. Claire Stoks also placed 20th in the individual 400-meter preliminary at 1:01.20.
Today’s Class A finals will begin at 3:30 p.m. at St. Michael-Albertville High School, following the conclusion of the Class AA preliminaries slated for 9 a.m.
Canby/Minneota girls will compete in the 4×800-meter final and Yellow Medicine East’s Klaira Shackelford will compete for Yellow Medicine East in the pole vault to start the meet at 3:30 p.m. Brynn Gloege will represent LQPV/DB in the 800-meter final at 6:46 p.m.
On the boys side, Anderson and Staab will get back in action in the discus at 4:45 p.m., while Boike will return to the track for the Eagles in the high jump and long jump, with both events starting at 3:30 p.m.
Jenniges will compete in the wheelchair 100 meters and 200 meters at 4:56 and 7:08 p.m., respectively.
