COTTONWOOD — A sacrifice hit from Jace Sigler to score Cash Antony from third base gave the Canby baseball team the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning for a Lancers a 5-4 win against Lakeview Thursday night in a Camden Conference matchup, snapping a four-game skid.
The Lancers and Lakers were locked up 4-4 for three innings leading up to the seventh, continuing to get runners on base with both teams holding one another off defensively. Both Jace Rangaard and Kyler Post pitched the entire night for Canby and Lakeview.
“It was a little bit of a rough first inning there, giving up four runs in the first,” Canby head coach Nick Kockelman said. “But, to get that winning run in the seventh inning and holding them [Lakeview] off feels pretty good.”
In Canby’s final at-bat in the seventh, Antony was hit by a pitch to take first base, and proceeded to steal second and third base.
Sigler stepped up to the plate with one out and hit a pop fly out to right field, caught by Lakeview’s Landyn Listul. Being on the opposite side of the field, Sigler had just enough time to tag third and charge home to give Canby the one-run lead.
“It stinks to lose, but I have no disappointment in this loss,” Lakeview head coach Curt Schake said. “The way they played, both teams played, this makes baseball fun, and it was a step in the right direction. That’s what we needed to see.”
Teagan Neuman and Post got on base for the Lakers in the bottom of the seventh off a line-drive single and a walk, but the Lancers’ defense finished the three outs with a trio of fly outs to save the win.
“We’ve been a little inconsistent defensively, but the last six innings, we were making plays and going where the ball needed to be and making the plays we were supposed to,” Kockelman said. “That keeps you in every game, and close in one-run games.”
Canby scored two runs to start the game in the top of the first, with both Sigler and Will Abrahamson running home on the same play from third and second base, respectively, off a Lakeview overthrow to third base.
Abrahamson and Dyllon Christianson led Canby with two hits apiece.
Yet, the Lakers scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-2 lead before Canby tied it up with a single run in each the second and third innings.
Lakeviews’ four runs in the first came from Neuman, Braylon Breyfogle, and Logan Herrick and Dylan Carron, all initially getting on base with hits.
“Over the last few games, our first two innings, we hit the ball really well. Then, we go quiet a little bit,” Schake said. “It’s kind of our [pattern] recently … But, we played clean baseball today.”
Neuman finished the day going 3 for 4 at the plate, leading Lakeview.
Rangaard and Post continued to pitch competitively with sound defense behind them to carry the two teams on through the next three innings, not allowing any runs.
Lakeview finished with eight hits and three errors, to Canby’s nine hits and three errors.
For the Lancers, Rangaard threw for four strikeouts and one walk with two earned runs.
“Jace pitched awesome,” Kockelman said. “We’re a little bit shorthanded on the pitching staff, so to have a complete game saves other arms. That was exactly what we needed out of him.”
Post finished with seven strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs for Lakeview.
“I just had a feeling that Kyler had a good game in him,” Schake said. “He was a good pitcher for us all seven innings for us, that was a nice surprise.”
Lakeview (0-10) will next host Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (13-5) in a rescheduled game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
“Hopefully we carry this forward, playing good baseball,” Schake said. “[If we can] avoid the bad inning … Where things just go backwards and carry that forward, that’s all that matters.”
Canby (3-6) will look to pick up another win next in a quick turnaround when it hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-6) today with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
“It was four [losses] in a row, and a couple of the games we were right in,” Kockelman. “To have a win always feels good. They’re not easy to come by.”
