Fossum sets 9-hole personal best as Tigers win Big South East meet

WORTHINGTON — Keegan Fossum set a new personal low score for a 9-hole round on Wednesday, shooting a 1-under 36 for the Marshall boys golf team at a Big South East meet at Great Life Golf & Fitness. The Tigers swept the top two spots and Fossum tied for third place in the 42-golfer event to give Marshall a first-place finish.

Fossum attributed his round to his ability to hit his irons accurately onto the green and his drivers onto the fairway.

“I was hitting a lot of greens in regulation, and it just helps when I don’t have to chip,” Fossum said. “And it’s just a lot easier to play out of the fairway, so if I can keep doing that, it’ll be easier to play golf.”

The Tigers put together a team score of 144, beating out runner-up St. Peter’s 159. New Ulm and Waseca tied for third with 160 strokes each while Tri-City United, Belle Plaine and Worthington finished at 170, 180 and 182, respectively.

Deacon Wing and Luke Ehlers were the top two individuals at the event, tying for first place at even-par with 35 strokes each. Wing played steady and even, recording exactly a par on each of the nine holes, while Ehlers notched birdies on holes 2, 5 and 9 with a bogey on 7 and a double-bogey on 5.

Fossum tiedNew Ulm’s Jaxon Buegler and Owen Matajcek for third place with 36 strokes each. Fossum carded a par or better on each of his first seven holes before finishing with a pair of bogeys.

Fossum’s round was highlighted by a birdie on hole 2. Hitting about 145 yards into the wind, Fossum took a high cut that landed right on the green.

“I was about 10 yards short of the hole, all uphill, and I just sent it right down the heart the whole way, not much to it,” Fossum said.

Elijah Winn rounded out Marshall’s scorers with a 3-over 38 with six pars on the day.

Jaylen Koster and Ethan Wendorff also competed for Marshall, with Koster placing 25th at 10-over 45 and Wendorff taking 34th at 14-over 49.

Marshall next competes on Friday at the Dacotah Ridge Invitational, hosted by Lakeville South. Play at the tournament at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton will begin at 1 p.m.
