Coequyt’s 26-point double-double powers Minneota past Lakeview

Minneota 50, Lakeview 44

MINNEOTA — Jaylyn Coequyt exploded for a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double on Tuesday night as the Minneota girls basketball team held off the Lakeview press for a 50-44 win.

Coequyt shot 11 of 25 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line, accounting for more than half of Minneota’s points on the night. Kiersyn Hulzebos also added 10 points on 1 of 6 from the field and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line.

Brynn Stensrud was the only Laker to make more than two field goals in the game but her offensive output kept Lakeview alive. She finished with 20 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field and 9 of 11 from the charity stripe. Savanna Louwagie added another 6 points on 2 of 3 shooting from the field while knocking down both of her two free throws.

Coequyt’s 10 rebounds tied her with Eden Meagher for a game-high while Libby Sussner added another seven boards. 

The Vikings built a 41-31 rebounding advantage, including an 11-10 margin on the offensive glass behind seven offensive rebounds from Meagher, four from Sussner and three from Coequyt. Brooke Gunlogson led the Lakers with 10 total rebounds and four offensive rebounds while Carmen Varpness grabbed another six rebounds.

A day after turning the ball over 42 times in a win over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, the Vikings cut down on miscues with 26 turnovers to Lakeview’s 21. Gunlogson led the Lakers with six steals while Coequyt had four and a block for Minneota. 

Minneota improves to 4-0 with the win and will look to remain undefeated when it hosts BOLD (4-2) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Lakeview falls to 3-1 after suffering its first loss of the season and will aim to return to its winning ways when it hosts Canby (2-3) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

YME 66, RCW 56 

RENVILLE — Bailey Mortenson’s 25 points and 13 rebounds powered the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team to a 66-56 win Tuesday evening over Renville County West. 

Mortenson shot 12 for 18 from the field for 66% on the night. 

Alana Almich also had a double-double performance with 18 points and 16 rebounds. 

Bayli Sneller added in 12 points of her own with six rebounds. 

The Sting shot 34% from the field overall and 31% from the 3 going 6 for 19. 

RCW was held to shooting 28% from the field with 21 made baskets on 75 attempts. 

YME out-rebounded RCW 45-36. 

The Sting (3-2) will look to keep the momentum going when it next hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. 

Canby 63, TMB 36 

TRACY — Three Lancers scored in double digits in Canby’s girls basketball 63-36 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday evening. 

Ava Danielson led all scorers with 17 points and six steals on the night for Canby. Brynn Kockelman followed with 14 points, and Izabelle Huzlebos finished with another 10. Emily Nelson led with seven rebounds. 

For the Panthers, Marin Knott led with 10 points and six rebounds. Kyli Carter had a team-high eight rebounds. 

Canby shot overall 35% from the field going 17 for 49, and TMB shot 27%, shooting 10 for 37. 

Canby, 2-3, will next travel to Lakeview, 3-1, on Friday at 7:15 p.m. 

TMB, 1-3, will visit Yellow Medicine East, 3-2, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

LQPV 54, Dawson-Boyd 44

DAWSON — Going into halftime only down by 3 points, the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team fell 54-44 to Lac Qui Parle Valley Tuesday night. 

Claire Stratmoen finished with a team-high 20 points with three assists, four rebounds and four steals. She shot 8 for 17 from the field and 3 for 5 from the 3. 

Alyssa Swedzinkski led the Blackjacks with seven rebounds, six of which were defensive boards. 

Dawson-Boyd overall shot 32% from the field and 26% from the 3. 

The Blackjacks (1-4) will next look to get back on track on Thursday when it hosts Central Minnesota Christian (402) at 7:30 p.m. 

Springfield 65, Wabasso 32

WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team wasn’t able to find its way into the win column on Tuesday night as the Rabbits fell 65-32 to Springfield.

Peyton Jenniges and Ava Samyn led the Rabbits in scoring on the night, Jenniges recording 10 points on 4 of 9 shooting and Samyn contributing 7 on 3 of 7 shooting. Jenniges also went 1 of 2 from beyond the arc, accounting for Wabasso’s only 3-point attempts of the game. 

Aylah Jenniges grabbed a team-high five rebounds while Sara Carlson’s three assists and two steals were both team-highs as well.

Jenniges and Anistasia Smith each blocked one shot.

Wabasso falls to 0-5 with the loss and will go on the road to take on Sleepy Eye (2-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
