Rebels return to 3A championship with semifinal win over Adrian

Oct. 29, 2024 prep football roundup

MCC 38, Adrian-Ellsworth 8

ADRIAN — The No. 3 Murray County Central Rebels football team took the field Saturday afternoon against No. 2 Adrian-Ellsworth seeking revenge from earlier in the season, and did just that with a 38-8 victory in the semifinals and now returns to the Section 3A championship for the first time since 2021.

MCC met the Dragons earlier this year on Sept. 20 and fell 13-11, but that wasn’t the case this time around. The Rebels had 314 total yards gained throughout the game, and held Adrian-Ellsworth to 102.

Although Teague Meyer threw one complete pass for four yards, he was second on the team with 70 rushing yards on 14 attempts and a pair of touchdowns, behind Carson Lewis with a team-high 162 rushing yards on 22 attempts and another two touchdowns. Andrew Holm also had 54-yards on eight attempts.

Jordan Sturges led the defensive line with six tackles, while Isaiah Wolske and Teague Meyer had five more respectively.

MCC sits at 8-2 overall, and continues to find success compared to its 4-5 2023 campaign. The last time the Rebels reached the 3A championship in 2021, it fell to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 23-8, who MCC eliminated in the quarterfinals this year.

The championship game will take place at 10 a.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University’s Mattke Field on Friday against No. 1 Springfield, who are so far undefeated this season at 9-0. The last time the two met earlier this season, MCC fell 28-18.

RCW 41, RRC 8

RENVILLE — The No. 3 Red Rock Central Falcons fell to the second-seed Renville County West Saturday afternoon 41-8 in the 2 9-Player semifinals, and ends its season 4-6 overall.

RCW scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, until RRC got on the board with one in the fourth, although it was too late for a comeback.

In team comparisons, the Jaguars had 300-yards gained and held the Falcons to 152.

RRC graduates Mason Huffman, the team’s only senior this year.

B.O.L.D 41, Dawson-Boyd 20

OLIVIA — Despite a close first quarter in the Section 5A semifinals on Saturday afternoon, No. 3 Dawson-Boyd’s season came to an end with a 41-20 loss to No. 2 B.O.L.D.

Each team scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but the Blackjacks couldn’t find an answer to the Warriors 21-point second quarter. Although Dawson-Boyd reached the end zone twice more in the second half, B.O.L.D. did just the same to keep its advantage.

Gunner Liebl threw 15 complete passes for 249 yards off 34 attempts, two touchdown passes and one interception. He also had a team-high 30 rushing yards on five attempts followed by Nathan Hansen with 22-yards on three attempts.

Brayson Boike went 164 yards on eight catches and ran in for a pair of touchdowns.

Hansen and Mason Bothun each had three tackles each on the night to lead the Blackjacks defensively.

Dawson-Boyd finished with a 7-3 overall record, and graduates seniors Grayson Olson, Brayson Boike, Drew Hjelmeland, Ashton Swendra, Gunnar Olson, Mitchell Myers, Collin Olson, Clayton Ellis, Kolten Petersen and Jameson Garcia.

Starting at $3.95/week.
