Trojans capitalize on Tiger miscues as Marshall falls 4-1

MARSHALL — The Worthington Trojans’ offense was too much for the Marshall boys soccer team to handle on Tuesday night as the Tigers fell 4-1 and dropped back to .500 on the season.

“We’ll have another chance, we just didn’t follow the game plan [tonight],” Marshall head coach Tony Correa said. “We were taking extra touches when we needed to just hit the open man. We really just didn’t play well… When we got the goal in the second half, we got momentum but we didn’t keep it the whole game. I think we made silly mistakes.”

The Trojans got off to a hot start and never looked back. In the 14th minute, Worthington stole the ball in the attacking third and zigged and zagged a series of passes through the Marshall defense. Running a 2-on-1 break, the Trojans got the ball to the opposite side of the net of Marshall goalie Roberto Garcia Lopez and zipped in the go-ahead goal.

While the Trojans finished the night with four goals, Garcia Lopez finished the night with 12 saves in net for the Tigers.

The game seemed like it would go into the break with the Trojans leading by just a goal, but Andy Guzman came up with another score for the Trojans with 37 seconds left before halftime.

Coming out of the break, Marshall looked motivated early. Sabino Us put the Tigers on the board with a goal in the 44th minute, but the Trojans’ defense locked down Marshall from there to secure the victory.

“We came out strong in the second half. [The deficit] wasn’t anything that we couldn’t come back from, we obviously have guys that can score, I just think at the end of the day we just didn’t show up today,” Correa said, adding that he felt at points Marshall was trying to do too much individually rather than as a team.

A Marshall yellow card with 23 minutes remaining set Worthington up with a free kick that turned into a goal. Worthington added one more for good measure with 3:36 remaining in the game.

Correa said he felt that the Trojans’ first goal should have been called offsides and that the penalty calls that led to Worthington’s second two goals could have gone either way, adding that the Tigers need to just focus on finishing plays and working together with their passes.

Isaiah Argueta left the game with a lower-body injury in the waning minutes of the second half. He did not return to play.

Marshall falls to 2-2 with the loss. The Tigers will look to get back on track when they go on the road to face Fairmont on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
