WATERTOWN, S.D. -- Four first-inning runs allowed gave the Watertown Arrows too large of a lead for the Marshall Mudcats to overcome in an American Legion baseball game on Thursday. The Mudcats limited the Arrows to two runs for the remainder of the game, but also only scored two of their own in the 6-2 loss to open the doubleheader.
Watertown retired the side in order in the top of the first before surging ahead in the bottom of the frame. With one out, the Arrows got a walk and three consecutive singles to drive in three runs, and hit another RBI single with two outs to make the score 4-0.
Logan Miller settled down on the mound after the first inning but was still charged with the loss. He was tagged for four earned runs and one unearned run on six hits and a pair of walks over four innings. He also struck out four batters.
In relief, Logan Phillippe threw two innings while limiting the Arrows to one unearned run on two hits with no walks.
The Arrows added another run in the third before Marshall fought its way onto the scoreboard in the fourth. Andrew Stelter singled and Eli Weedman reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and a Levi Maeyaert sacrifice fly trimmed the deficit to 5-1.
After a JR Vierstaete single and Liam Kruse getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases, Deagan Maurice singled in another run to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. Yet, Watertown got a 6-5-3 double play to escape the inning.
Stelter, Vierstraete, Maurice and Shep Jensen accounted for Marshall's lone hits of the game, with Watertown holding an 8-4 advantage in the category. Marshall also committed four errors while Watertown finished with one.
The Arrows added one last insurance run in the bottom of the sixth before retiring three of the four Mudcat batters in the seventh to end the game.

WATERTOWN, S.D. -- After dropping the first game of its Thursday doubleheader against Watertown, the Marshall Mudcats' bats bounced back in resounding fashion in game 2. Josh Kraft and Andrew Stelter led the offensive onslaught with four hits each as the Mudcats toppled the Arrows 17-4 in five innings.
In addition to Kraft and Stelter each tallying three singles and a double, Leyton Wherry finished with a triple, a single, a walk and three RBIs, Shep Jensen singled three times for two RBIs, and JR Vierstraete and Liam Kruse each singled twice and walked once for two RBIs.
Marshall pulled ahead in the top of the second. With the game tied at one run apiece, Liam Kruse singled and Deagan Maurice reached on an error to set the table. Shep Jensen beat out a bunt single to score Kruse for the go-ahead run and Leyton Wherry followed up with another RBI single.
Stelter loaded the bases with the team's third consecutive single and a run scored when Eli Weedman grounded out on a double play. Kraft capped off the rally by hitting a line-drive single to score Wherry for a 5-1 lead.
Kraft also scored in the fourth when he singled and crossed home on a Vierstraete single, but it was the fifth inning in which Marshall put the game to bed.
A Jensen single and a Wherry walk put two runners on base before Watertown got back-to-back fly outs to freeze the runners on first and second. Yet, Kraft singled to load the bases and Levi Maeyaert was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Vierstraete followed up with an RBI single and Kruse hit a two-run single to left field, bringing Marshall's lead to seven runs.
Vierstraete and Kruse scored on a passed ball and a Jensen single. After another passed ball put two runners in scoring position, and a two-run triple from Wherry and an RBI double from Stelter, and a wild pitch that scored Stelter brought the score to 17-4.
Logan Phillippe closed out the game on the mound, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to seal the mercy-rule victory. He finished the day with three no-hit innings of scoreless relief, striking out two batters while walking two.
Kraft threw the first two innings for Marshall, giving up two earned and two unearned runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts in the no-decision.
Marshall remains a game over .500 at 9-8 on the season and next hosts Alexandria for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

RTR 4, Edgerton 0
WINDOM -- The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton American Legion baseball team kicked off its sub-substate tournament run with a win on Thursday. Kolby Louwagie and Tyler Wichmann pitched a combined shutout as No. 2 RTR downed No. 3 Edgerton 4-0.
Louwagie earned the win with a five-inning start, limiting Edgerton to two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Wichmann closed out the victory with six strikeouts and just one hit allowed over two innings.
Both teams were scoreless until Isaac Janish and Levi Tommeraasen walked to start the fourth inning. Janish scored on a passed ball and Tommeraason scored on a Quin Vidana single to make the score 2-0.
Vidana led RTR with two hits in the game while Janish and Gavin Schreurs each logged a single and a walk.
RTR added another pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Wichmann and Janish singled, and with two outs, Tyson Burns walked to load the bases. Gabe Elton was then hit by a pitch to drive in one run and Janish again scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-0.
RTR will take on the winner of Adrian and Luverne on Saturday at 11 a.m.

MACCRAY 7, Granite Falls 4
The Granite Falls American Legion baseball team couldn't keep pace with the bats of the MACCRAY Patriots in their subsection matchup on Thursday night. Granite Falls led through four innings, but a four-run fifth inning gave MACCRAY the 7-4 win.
Trailing by a pair of runs, two singles, an RBI double and an RBI single gave MACCRAY a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. They added one more run to increase that edge to 6-4 and held on for the win from there.
Granite Falls faced a 2-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the second when their bats started to roll. Gage Wilke walked and was replaced by courtesy runner Dane Hildahl, who scored when Eric Jimenez reached base on an error. Brady Dahlager then replaced Jimenez on third as a courtesy runner before scoring on a Hayden Kuehn single for the tying run, and Kuehn scored on a Kian Christensen sacrifice fly to give Granite Falls a 3-2 lead.
Jimenez was charged with the loss for Granite Falls, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings. In relief, Jacob Peterson gave up one unearned run on two hits and four walks over 2 2/3 frames, striking out six batters.
Gavin Torvik and Gunnar Fagen led the Granite Falls bats with two hits each on the day, including a triple and a walk for Torvik and a double for Fagen. Gage Wilke also logged a single and two walks.
Granite Falls' lead reached its apex when Torvik led off the fourth inning with a triple and went home on an error on the same play.
MACCRAY added one last insurance run in the top of the seventh.
