Tigers claim dual win in home opener

MARSHALL — Hosting Willmar for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon, the Marshall swim and dive team ran away with a 105-75 victory at the Don Palm Natatorium.

Finley Penz, Grace Rokeh, Autumn Deutz and Alana Condezo each had a pair of individual first-place finishes to lead the way for the Tiger victory.

Pelz claimed a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 2:05.84 to beat out teammate and runner-up Hailey Larsen’s time of 2:15.79. In the 500-yard freestyle, she ran away from the rest of the competition with her winning time of 5:42.39 putting her 44 seconds ahead of Willmar’s second- and third-place finishes.

Rokeh won the 200-yard individual medley at 2:28.36, beating her own seed time by three seconds. Marshall’s Leah Hybbert also claimed third in the event at 2:42.83. Rokeh also won the 100-yard freestyle at 58.58 while Hybbert followed right behind her for second place at 1:03.98.

Deutz and Raya Goergen took first and second in the 1-meter dive, with Deutz scoring a 174.55 and Goergen scoring a 113.30. Deutz also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.69.

Condezo claimed a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.19, beating out Willmar’s Kaylee Hurley at 1:09.18 and Marshall’s Hailey Larsen at 1:12.08. Larsen’s time was two seconds faster than her seed time. Condezo also placed first in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:09.72.

Marshall also claimed a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Deutz, Rokeh, Aaliyah Podratz and Pelz clocked in at 1:49.73 to beat out Willmar by eight seconds in the 200 and Deutz, Rokeh, Condezo and Pelz finished the 400 relay at 4:08.17. Marshall also had the runner-up time in the 400 with Larsen, Hybbert, Alex Brown and Joleigh Kesteloot placing second at 4:26.69. 

Podratz finished as the 100-yard breaststroke runner-up at 1:23.33, three seconds shy of the win, while the Marshall 200-yard medley relay team of Condezo, Podratz, Hybbert and Brown finished second at 2:07.26, just shy of Willmar’s winning time of 2:06.66.

Marshall will next compete on Thursday, Sept. 12 when they host Montevideo at 6 p.m.
