Fahl, Drake help Marshall survive scare in S.D.

WATERTOWN, S.D. — The No. 2 Marshall volleyball team survived a rare scare on Tuesday night. After dropping the first set of its matchup against Watertown, the Tigers found themselves in a five-set duel against the Arrows. Still, the Tigers came out on top 21-25, 25-16, 26-24, 18-25, 17-15 to hand Watertown its third consecutive loss after a 3-0 start.

Avery Fahl put forth a versatile effort for the Marshall volleyball team to lead the victory. She had six blocks to make things hard on the Arrows’ hitters and also led the team with 27 set assists alongside Brooke Gillingham’s 20. Fahl’s 12 kills were also good for third on the team.

Reese Drake also had a monster night for Marshall, leading the way offensively with 23 kills and tying Kezlyn Pinckney with a team-leading 27 digs. Drake also tied Gillingham, Trinity Brownlee and Audree Larson with one block on the night.

Kyah Pinckney added another 25 digs for the Tigers and went a perfect 17-of-17 from the service line. Kezlyn Pinckney also tied Halle DeVos with a team-leading two aces with just one service error on 19 attempts.

Laurel Ryks added 15 kills on the night for Marshall.

The Tigers improve to 4-0 on the season with the win. They’ll face Class AA’s ninth-ranked Redwood Valley on the road on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Cardinals head into the game on a three-match win streak after their season-opening loss to Minneota.

RTR 3, TMB 0

TRACY — Coming off a loss to No. 2 Minneota last week, the No. 4 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team snapped back into form on Tuesday night. The Knights put together a balanced effort to sweep Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in dominant fashion, 25-8, 25-20, 25-10.

Brezlyn Buchert led the Knights with 21 set assists while Avery Schreurs and Dru Ellefson added two and four respectively. Buchert also tied Ava Karbo with a team-leading one block.

In the back row, Schreurs led the team with 12 digs while Laken Baartman contributed 11 and Buchert chipped in another seven. Baartman also had five aces from the service line.

Sara and Paisley Thooft headed the RTR attack with seven kills each while Ava Guida added another six.

TMB stats were not available at the time of print.

RTR improves to 3-1 with the win while TMB drops to 1-2. The Knights and Panthers will both next compete at the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall. The two-day tournament will begin on Friday at 5 p.m.

WWG 3, Luverne 1

LUVERNE — Carlie Ross, Liv Locke and Natalie Wahl led a well-rounded back-row effort from the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team on Tuesday night as the Chargers overcame a first-set defeat for a 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 win over Luverne.

Ross, Locke and Wahl each recorded 11 digs on the night for the Chargers. Wahl and Ross also added 12 and eight kills respectively while Leah Carter contributed another nine.

Hadley Jenniges helped set up WWG’s balanced attack with 32 set assists in the win.

In the front row, Riley Parker finished with two solo blocks and a block assist, Carter added a solo and assisted block and Faith Marsh added a solo block.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove, now 2-0 on the season, will look to keep the ball rolling as they head to Granite Falls for a Thursday night matchup against Yellow Medicine East. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Windom 3, RRC 0

WINDOM — A big blocking night for the Red Rock Central volleyball team wasn’t enough to put a stop to the Windom hitters on Tuesday night. Tia Donkersloot and Shylin Hagert both contributed major defensive efforts at the net but the Falcons fell 25-20, 27-25, 25-18 against the Eagles.

Donkersloot led the team with seven blocks on the night while Hagert added another five. Donkersloot also led the team with nine kills and a pair of aces at the service line.

Maia Scheffler led the back row with 13 digs while Natasha Erickson contributed an ace on 14 good serves.

RRC falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss and will look to get back to .500 when it hosts Murray County Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

CGB 3, Dawson-Boyd 0

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd volleyball team couldn’t penetrate the Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley defense on Tuesday night as the Blackjacks fell in straight sets, 25-18, 25-10, 25-23.

Reese Johnson led the Blackjacks on the night with five kills and three total blocks while Lindsey Lund and Kadyn Perkins added another five and four kills respectively. As a team, Dawson-Boyd totaled 18 kills on the night.

Bailey Bothun recorded 12 set assists for the Blackjacks while Matti Gruwell added another five.

Dawson-Boyd will try to avoid falling to 0-3 on the season when they head to Slayton to do battle with the Murray County Central Rebels on Thursday at 7 p.m.
