Wabasso shuts out Willmar in 4C play-in game
WILLMAR – In a fight to earn a spot in the upcoming Region 4C Corn Belt League Tournament, the No. 8 Wabasso Jaxx upset the No. 5 Willmar Rails 6-4 on Friday night in the play-in.
This was the Jaxx’s first playoff victory in the six years of the franchise.
The top four spots in the tournament are held by Bird Island, Raymond, Milroy and Marshall, as the fifth team will depend on who wins the next two play-in games. Wabasso will play Granite Falls on Saturday at 5 p.m. away at their field in an attempt to earn the spot.
Wabasso held Willmar scoreless for the first four innings, while they were able to score their six runs during that time.
Caleb Kemp and Colton Taylor led the Jaxx’s offense with a combined four hits while Kemp added in two RBIs. Joe Liebl pitched the first six innings, allowing four runs between the fifth and sixth, but threw four strikeouts. Devan Liebl finished the last three innings with no runs or strikeouts.
For the Rails, Patrick Courtney pitched the first 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs with two strikeouts. Adam Herman stepped in as relief the remainder of the game, allowing one run and throwing four strikeouts.
Wabasso will continue their season and move to a record of 3-12.
The 4C Tournament will take place in Willmar Aug. 3 and 4, and Aug. 9 and 11. The higher seed in each game will be the home team.
