Sirovy’s four hits lead VFW Orange to state berth

ST. PETER — The Marshall VFW Orange 15U baseball team punched its ticket to the state tournament on Wednesday night with an 11-1 win over New Ulm Silver.

The District II championship round was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday. Yet, Marshall’s semifinal opponent in the winner’s bracket didn’t have enough pitchers to continue onto the championship. As a result, the Marshall-Chaska game just determined whether Marshall would go into the finals with one loss or two losses in the double-elimination tournament.

In the end, Andrew Lee came up with a walk-off two-run double to give Marshall a 14-13 win over Chaska and put Marshall in a position to need just one win out of two games against New Ulm to claim the title.

It turned out that Marshall only needed one game to put New Ulm away, with a stellar pitching performance from Cannon Craigmile keeping Silver off the scoreboard in the six-inning victory.

Craigmile tossed 5 2/3 innings for Marshall before being pulled due to pitch count. He held New Ulm scoreless for the first five innings and finished the day with eight strikeouts. Craigmile surrendered just two hits and four walks while Trae Bailey closed out the game by striking out the lone batter he faced.

The game’s first run came in the bottom of the third when Ethan Boeck doubled and then scored on a Jackson Sirovy single. Still, it was the fourth when Marshall cracked the game all the way open.

Lee and Easton Greenwood got Marshall started with a single and a hit-by-pitch to put two runners on. After a strikeout put two away, Boeck singled in a run for a 2-0 Marshall lead and Sirovy singled to load up the bases.

Greenwood scored on a wild pitch shortly thereafter and, after Ethan Weedman walked to reload the bases, Tyler Kraft and Craigmile each drew another walk to give Marshall a 5-0 lead.

Sirovy led Marshall at the plate with four hits — including a pair of doubles — and five RBIs in five at-bats. Boeck also had a single and a double while Weedman had a single and two walks.

As a team, Marshall outhit New Ulm 9-2. New Ulm also committed three errors on the day while Marshall did not commit one.

A pair of walks to Greenwood and Noah Frazee to start the fifth set the table for Sirovy to hit a two-run double with two outs. After Weedman singled to put runners on the corners, Kraft reached base on an error to drive in another Marshall run, making the score 8-0.

New Ulm got a run back in the top of the sixth but Marshall finished the job with three runs in the bottom of the frame to trigger the run rule. Bailey walked to start the inning, advanced to third on a passed ball and a ground out, and scored on a Greenwood sacrifice fly to make the score 9-1.

In need of two more runs to finish the game, Frazee reached on an error and Boeck was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on first. Sirovy leaned up from there with another two-run double to seal the 11-1 victory.

The VFW State Tournament will begin on Wednesday in St. Cloud. The matchups and schedule for the state tournament are yet to be announced.
