Buttermakers move on in Region 13C playoffs

HADLEY — On Saturday afternoon, the No. 6 Hadley Buttermakers claimed a 9-4 victory in game 2 of their best-of-3 series against 11th-seeded Heron Lake to advance to the second round of the Region 13C Tournament. They will take on Fairmont in the next round.

Bryce Ahrendt laid the path for the Buttermaker win with a seven-inning outing on the mound. He struck out nine batters without a walk while allowing one unearned run on four hits. The victory improved his record to 3-2 on the season.

It took Hadley just three at-bats to score the game’s go-ahead run. Tucker Sorenson tripled with one out in the top of the first before scoring on Derek Kluis’ single immediately after.

Still, it was the second inning that set the tone for the day. An Abe Paulzine double and an Alex Peterson single put runners on the corners. Peterson stole second to get in scoring position and sacrifice flies from Evan Lenz and Joe Larson made the score 3-0.

Still, the rally kept going. Sorenson tripled for the second time in as many at-bats before scoring on a wild pitch.

Kluis also walked before advancing to second on the same wild pitch, Max Zwart reached on an error to put runners on the corners and Danny Blankenship’s two-run double made the score 6-0. The five-run inning gave Hadley more than enough run support to claim the victory.

In the fifth, Lenz singled, stole second and scored when Larson reached on an error to give Hadley one more run of cushion.

The Lakers’ first run of the day was an unearned run in the top of the sixth. Still, Hadley responded in turn when Jake Olson also singled before eventually scoring on a Peterson single in the bottom of the frame. One inning later, Larson reached on an error before scoring on a Kluis RBI single to give Hadley its largest lead of the day, 9-1.

Heron Lake scored another unearned run in the eighth after Ahrendt left the game and two more earned runs in the ninth, but the Lakers were never able to close the gap.

Avery Weber tossed two innings of relief, allowing two earned runs and one unearned run on a hit and four walks for Hadley.

Sorenson and Blankenship each had a pair of extra-base hits and a pair of RBIs for the Buttermakers, including two triples for Sorenson and two doubles and a single for Blankenship. Peterson also had a double and a single while Larson and Kluis each added a pair of singles.

Hadley will take on Fairmont in the next round of the tournament starting on Wednesday, with a 7:30 p.m. road matchup with the Martins. Hadley will host game 2 on Saturday at 2 p.m. and, if necessary, the series will return to Fairmont for game 3 on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Fairmont earned the No. 3 seed in the Region 13C tournament. In their lone regular-season matchup against the Buttermakers, the Martins claimed a 4-1 win in Hadley despite a stellar pitching performance from Sorenson.

Starting at $4.38/week.
