Marshall track and field opens season in Mankato

Marshall Boys and Girls Track and Field teams competed in their first meet of the season on Tuesday evening at the MSUM indoor track. Mankato West, Hutchinson and Waseca also competed in the event. The Marshall girls team finished in 2nd place with 28 points. The boys’ team finished in 2nd with 24 points.

The Tigers Girls’ team had several performances that earned athletes top three honors in their events. The meet began with the Girl’s 4×800 relay. Marshall entered multiple teams in the race and had the first and third-place relay teams.

The relay team of Katelyn Liebfried, Allyson Sample, Anna Kuecker, and Taleigha Bigler won the race with a time of 10:00.80. The team consisting of Cameen McFarquhar, Oakely Schneekloth, Landrey Graven, and Gracelyn Foster placed third with a time of 11:07.32.

Sample picked up another first place in the 1600 with a winning time of 5:30.92.

The Girl’s sprint medley relay (Bigler, Avery Schneekolth, Madysson Hassert, and K. Leibfried) placed first with a time of 5:05.36.

In the field events, both Autumn Deutz and Paige Gillingham took first in their respective events. Deutz won the Pole Vault by clearing 9’6“. Gillingham took first in Shot Put with a throw of 36’11.5”.

“I was nervous going into it, but I knew if I kept my focus on throwing as far as I could without overthrowing I could potentially win the meet,” Gillingham, a junior, said. “There was some good competition here to start off the season. It felt good, but I know I’m just scratching the surface.”

Eighth-grader Brooklyn Purrington placed second in the high jump with a height of 4’10”.

On the boys’ side, Marshall teams placed first and second in the 4×800 relay. The relay consisting of Sam Deutz, Landon Marthaler, Mykel Paulson and Josh Leibfried placed first with a time of 8:28.01. The relay team consisting of Ethan Bly, Kohen Holcomb, Chase Werner and Jack Gunn placed second with a time of 8:58.59.

The Marshall boys also won the 4×400 meet relay to close out the meet. The relay team of Ethan Bly, Mychel Paulson, Josh Leibfried and Alex Fransen won the race with 3:41.

In the field, Jack Meier placed first in the high jump with a jump of 5’8″.

Marshall had three athletes place second in their individual races. Aidan Schuerman finished second in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.71. Mikey Hess placed second in the 200m dash with a time of 24.78. Sam Deutz also placed second in the 1600 with a time of 4:48.84.

The Boys’ 4×200 team consisting of Mikey Hess, Aidan Schuerman, Lincoln Degroot and Adan Felton placed third with a time of 1:43.66.
