Second-half defensive effort leads DB past Lakeview boys

MONTEVIDEO — The No. 9N Lakeview boys basketball team, coming off an 81-78 win over No. 8 Wabasso Thursday, didn’t have the answer to slow down the Blackjacks’ second-half surge as No. 1 Dawson-Boyd defeated the Lakers 71-35 at Saturday’s Section 3A North game in Montevideo.

The game opened with Lakeview’s junior guard Tyson Marczak hitting the first bucket; he was the Lakers’ leading scorer with 18 points in the contest. Dawson-Boyd’s first score came from Brayson Boike, who went to the free-throw line after being fouled. The Blackjacks’ offense added first-half points from Boike, Drew Hjelmeland Gunner Liebl, Kade Solem, and Nathan Hansen. Lakeview’s offensive efforts kept them in the game during the first half; Braylon Brefogle, Cody Helmke, and Marczak combined for the Lakers’ first-half baskets. With a one-point lead, Blackjacks’ coach Cory Larson called a timeout. Lakeview could keep up with Dawon-Boyd’s defense in the first half, holding the Blackjacks to 35 points. Right before the buzzer, Marczak banked in a 3-point shot, giving the Lakers 26 points.

The Blackjacks came out aggressively in the second half with junior Drew Hjelmeland hitting a 3-pointer, but he also picked up his fourth personal foul just a few minutes into the half. Gunner Liebl was also called for his fourth foul, forcing the Blackjacks to look to their bench for some scoring.

Nathan Hansen, Jaxton Hastad, and Colton Bothun accounted for 14 of the team’s total points. The Jacks’ second-had defensive effort held the Lakers’ to only 9 points and forced 21 turnovers compared to Dawson-Boyd’s six.

“Defensively, holding a team to 9 points in the second half is a super great effort from our kids,” Larson said. “The team played a very good second half. Thought we settled in. Some first-half jitters, which were to be expected.”

Thursday’s matchup is against No. 4 Minneota in Montevideo at 6 p.m. Dawson-Boyd has beaten the Vikings twice in the regular season, 64-55 and 58-53. The latter of those two wins gave Dawson-Boyd its second consecutive conference title.

Looking ahead to that game, Coach Larson said, “[We] Need a solid 3 days of practice. Continue to get better.”

Lakeview ended its season with a 6-22 record; the seniors on the team were Kyle Kurowski and Cale Erickson.
