Marshall wins 10th straight Big South title

MARSHALL — The top-ranked Marshall volleyball team continued its dominance on Tuesday night by taking down St. Peter in straight sets for its 10th consecutive Big South Championship. No other team has ever won a Big South title.

The Saints had Marshall sweating in the first set, extending the game until Marshall pulled away for a 29-27 win. From there, the Tigers rolled over the Saints 25-9, 25-14.

The Tigers’ offense was particularly balanced with three players finishing with double-digit kills. A big part of that was the work of setter Brooke Gillingham, who had 40 set assists in the match.

On the finishing end, Brielle Riess led the team with 17 kills — as well as 13 digs, a pair of blocks and two aces– while Reese Drake and Morgan Bjella each had another 11. Avery Fahl also contributed eight kills.

Kennedy Drake led the team’s back line with 19 digs while Reese Drake had another 14.

Marshall (24-5) will now prepare to host the section 2AAA quarterfinals on Wednesday, Oct. 25
