Houseman runs for 165 yards in Lancers’ 32-0 victory

CANBY — Dylan Houseman ran for 165 yards on Tuesday night to lead the No. 4 Canby football team to a 32-0 win over No. 5 Lac qui Parle Valley in the opening round of the Section 5A tournament.

Quarterback Nick Wagner was the Lancers’ second-leading rusher with 13 carries for 45 yards and a score. Isaac Guzman also had a rushing touchdown on the day and racked up 65 total scrimmage yards.

In the passing game, Nick Wagner threw 17 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Evan Engesmoe led the Lancers’ receivers with four catches for 64 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Wagner also had three tackles and a scoop-and-score touchdown.

Allen Maldonado had four tackles and a sack while Sam Drietz had five tackles and a sack.

With the win, Canby (6-3) will head out on the road to face top-seeded Minneota on Saturday.

Dawson-Boyd 20, MACCRAY 19

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd football team had a close call in the opening round of the 5A section tournament against MACCRAY Tuesday night, surviving a late touchdown to hold on for a 20-19 win.

Gunner Liebl ran for an 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of the playoff matchup to give the Blackjacks a 20-13 lead after a missed extra point. With 14 seconds left, however, Isaac Post completed a 5-yard pass to Sebastian Cisneros for a touchdown to put MACCRAY an extra point away from forcing overtime. Yet, the kick was no good and the Blackjacks held on.

Liebl’s fourth-quarter touchdown was his second of the day. Trailing 7-0 after halftime, he ran for a nine-yard score in the third quarter to tie up the game. Lieble took 17 carries for 112 yards in the game while throwing 14 passes for 66 yards. Grayson Olson was the team’s leading receiver with two catches for 34 yards.

Dawson-Boyd took the lead in the third frame when Nathan Hansen ran for a 38-yard gain to put the Blackjacks up 13-0.

Parker Bothun led the Dawson-Boyd defense with nine total tackles and a tackle for loss while Olson and Brayson Boike each had an interception.

Dawson-Boyd (5-4) will now face No. 2 B.O.L.D. in Olivia on Saturday. When the teams last met, B.O.L.D. won 69-0 back on Sept. 29.

SEU 36, Wabasso 0

SLEEPY EYE — The No. 8 Wabasso football team was never able to find its offensive rhythm in a 36-0 loss to top-seededSleepy Eye United in the opening round of the 3A section tournament on Tuesday night.

Sam Zeug led the Rabbits offense with 14 carries for 41 yards and a fumble. Joe Liebl ran 10 times for 13 yards and threw 20 attempts for 30 yards. He threw two interceptions and fumbled twice.

On the defensive end of the field, Boston Brand led the Rabbits with 11 total tackles while Zeke Olson and Garrett Marotzke finished with seven and six respectively.

Wabasso finishes its season winless at 0-9.

B.O.L.D. 54, YME 14

OLIVIA — A pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns weren’t enough for the No. 7 Yellow Medicine East football team to upset No. 2 B.O.L.D. in the 5A section tournament Tuesday night as the Warriors walked away with a 54-14 win.

Trailing 54-0, Brady Dahlager ran for a 6-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion to put the Sting on the board and Owen Cherveny ran for a 4-yard touchdown to cap off the night’s scoring. Cherveny finished the night with six carries for 69 yards while Dahlager ran 14 times for 67 yards.

In the passing game, Andrew Flaten threw the ball 10 times for 50 yards and an interception. Cherveny caught one pass for 37 yards while Connor Fagen caught another for 13 yards.

Cherveny and Dahlager also led the Sting defense with nine total tackles each while Moi Hidalgo had another six and a tackle for loss.

B.O.L.D. ran for 325 yards on 37 attempts while throwing for 177 yards on 13 attempts.

B.O.L.D. will now host No. 3 Dawson-Boyd on Saturday for the section semifinals.

Adrian-Ellsworth 28, MCC 7

ADRIAN — The No. 5 Murray County Central football team’s season came to an end in the first round of the 3A section tournament on Tuesday night as they fell 28-7 to the Adrian-Ellsworth Dragons.

The Dragons also won the teams’ regular-season matchup 19-15 on Sept. 22.

Stats were unavailable for the game at time of press.

Murray County Central finishes its season at 4-5.
