SMSU soccer continues road play in North Dakota
The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s soccer team (0-4, 0-1 NSIC) continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this Friday and Sunday with a pair of road games in the state of North Dakota.
On Friday night, SMSU will take on Minot State University (4-2, 1-1 NSIC) with game time slated for 6 p.m. at First Western Bank Field at Herb Parker Stadium in Minot.
SMSU closes the weekend on Sunday afternoon with a match-up versus the University of Mary (1-3-2, 0-1-1 NSIC) starting at 1 p.m. at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
Series history
SMSU and MSU meet for the 13th time on Friday night with MSU leading 10-2 in a series that started in 2010.
The two teams split the first four games in the series but MSU has won the last eight with SMSU’s last victory coming on Sept. 21, 2013. MSU defeated SMSU 1-0 last season in Minot.
SMSU and UMary meet for the 21st time with UMary leading 16-4.
UMary earned a 1-0 victory last season in Bismarck and has shutout SMSU the last five meetings. SMSU’s last win in the series came on Oct. 2, 2016, in Marshall.
SMSU last week
SMSU dropped its NSIC opener last Sunday in Wayne, Neb., losing 1-0 to Wayne State.
The Mustangs had ten shots during the game with three coming from Audrey Gallagher, with two of hers being on target. Reese Leighton, Haley Mason, Malorie Maderak, and Brooke Wetterstrom all tallied one shot on target.
Kenna Conley made four saves in the losing effort.
SMSU notes
SMSU’s lone goal this season was scored by Alyson Gallagher in the season opener. She also leads the team with five shots, including two on goal.
Selena Prolic has the team’s lone assist this season.
Rachel Hicks is 0-2 in goal, while Kenna Conley is 0-2 on the season.
Scouting Minot State
The Beavers are 4-2 overall, 1-1 NSIC, following a split last weekend, defeating UMary 1-0, before suffering a 1-0 loss at Northern State.
Illiana Rivera leads the Beavers with one goal and one assist.
MSU was picked to finish sixth in the preseason NSIC poll.
Scouting UMary
The Marauders are 1-3-2 overall, 0-1-1 NSIC, after losing to Minot State 2-1 and recording a 0-0 tie with MSU Moorhead.
MaLiah Burke leads the Marauders with one goal and one assist.
UMary was picked to finish fifth in the preseason NSIC poll.
