Vote yes on Marshall Public Schools $2M operating referendum
The Marshall school district is one of the better school districts in the state. It is a source of pride for the community and a major asset when families consider relocating to Marshall. Its sports teams’ success is nearly unrivaled in the state and it can point to many academic successes as well. We would hate to see this jeopardized by not financially supporting our schools to maintain its existing programs.
The school district has had to tap into its reserves in recent years to meet its operating expenses. Unfortunately, it cannot continue doing that as doing so could leave the district in a very bad situation should a future unanticipated need arises for the reserves. In spite of sound financial management by the administration, funding is not keeping pace with expenditures.
This leaves the patrons of the district with some difficult choices. Voters in the upcoming referendum vote on Tuesday have a choice.
They can support the $2 million operating referendum to preserve all the present resources offered to students. But that will mean increased property tax bills.
If they reject that and vote no on the referendum this would necessitate the need to cut teachers, support staff, programs, and extracurriculars that are very popular with students and parents and which are critical to ensuring that every student is getting the most out of their school experience as possible.
We understand that many people feel that extra taxes to fund the school is a tough pill to swallow. Many school expenses are mandated by the state and discretionary spending is limited. Every student must be served including those with special needs. Paraprofessionals are necessary and special services for students with mental and physical health concerns are mandated by the state. Finding and hiring qualified teachers is becoming a greater challenge every year. The cuts that would inevitably follow a rejected referendum will impact every student in the school along with employees and their families that will lose their jobs.
One area that no vibrant community can skimp with is its school district. Schools train the next generation of workers, citizens, volunteers, and parents.
Let’s keep our school strong, vibrant, and something that the entire community can take pride in. We encourage you to vote yes for this referendum. Our current and future students will thank you.
