Tigers take down River Lakes, 3-2
BLAINE — The Marshall girls’ hockey team defeated River Lakes 3-2 in the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic Wednesday morning to get their first win since Dec. 5 over Windom.
After a scoreless first period, Marshall struck twice in the second period to take control.
Kayta Waltz opened the scoring for the Tigers with her first goal of the season, coming off an assist from Ava Kolander 10 minutes into the period.
Five minutes later, Marshall’s lead doubled with a goal from Lily Verkinderen, assisted by Kendal Beernaert and Olivia Degroot. The goal was Verkinderen’s third of the season.
Brooklyn Mauch scored her third goal of the season as well off an assist from Kalyn DeVlieger to cap Marshall’s scoring for the night and give the Tigers a 3-0 lead two minutes into the third period.
The Stars wouldn’t go down without a fight, however. They scored a pair of goals in the third period to cut the Marshall lead to 3-2 with just over three minutes remaining.
Yet, Marshall hung on to secure two points in the standings.
Marshall was held to eight shots on goal in the first period, but kept the River Lakes goaltender busy in the latter two frames with 12 and 14 shots on goal.
Belle Deutz finished the night with 23 saves in goal for Marshall.
Following the win, Marshall (3-8-1) will try to keep their momentum going when they go on the road to face Worthington Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
