SMSU TENNIS: SMSU puts together strong weekend at Gustavus Invite

ST. PETER — The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team completed a busy Saturday and Sunday competing at the Gustie Invite hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College.

The invite consisted of individual, and doubles matches but no team matches. Schools competing in the invite included Gustavus, Sioux Falls, Minnesota State and UMary.

Courtenay Leonard and Cora Delich both played in the ‘A’ flight singles with Leonard earning a 7-6, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals versus Minnesota State, before losing 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals to Gustavus. Delich won her opening match, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) versus Gustavus, before suffering a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the semifinals to Minnesota State. Leonard earned third place with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Delich.

Maja Louisa Harck earned fifth place in the ‘B’ flight winning her final two matches. She lost 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) in the quarterfinals to Minnesota State, before earning a win in the consolation bracket via injury default versus Sioux Falls and then picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sioux Falls for fifth place.

Joana Reis Indio advanced to the finals of the ‘C’ flight earning a 6-2, 7-5 win versus Gustavus and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sioux Falls in the semifinals, but she couldn’t play in the championship match on Sunday due to an injury.

Abbey Agra finished the weekend 2-1 in the ‘D’ flight to earn fifth place. She lost her opening match, 6-0, 6-2 to Gustavus, but earned a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the consolation semifinals, before winning 6-2, 6-0 over another Sioux Falls team in the consolation final.

Marisol Palacio and Daniela Poulakidas both played in the ‘E’ flight with Palacio losing 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the quarterfinals to UMary, before picking up a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) win over Gustavus in the consolation semis. Poulakidas lost 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round to Gustavus, before recording a 6-3, 6-0 win over UMary. Poulakidas then earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over her teammate, Palacio, in the fifth-place match.

Roz Oye and Skylar Mendro competed in the ‘F’ flight during the weekend. Oye won her opening match versus Sioux Falls, 6-2, 6-3, before suffering a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Gustavus in the semifinals. She closed the invite with a 6-4, 6-1 setback to Gustavus to finish in fourth place. Mendro lost 6-0, 6-0 to Gustavus in the first round, dropped a 6-3, 7-6 match to Minnesota State in the consolation round, before closing the invite with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Sioux Falls.

In the ‘A’ doubles bracket, Delich and Reis Indio lost 8-5 to Sioux Falls in the opening round. Delich paired with Oye for the final two matches, losing 8-2 to Gustavus and 8-7 to UMary.

Roz and Palacio played in the ‘B’ doubles bracket and lost 8-4 to Gustavus in the quarterfinals. Due to an injury, Palacio and Agra would team-up for an 8-7 win over Minnesota State, before recording an 8-6 victory over Sioux Falls to earn fifth place.

Poulakidas and Medro paired up in the ‘C’ bracket and suffered an 8-1 loss to Gustavus in the first round. The duo earned an 8-5 over Gustavus in its next match before losing 8-1 to UMary to finish in sixth place.

Southwest Minnesota State (2-0) returns to dual match play next Saturday, Sept. 25, with a pair of matches in Northfield, Minn. SMSU takes on St. Olaf at 9 a.m. before facing Carleton at 2 p.m. SMSU will have its lone home match this fall on Oct. 16 versus Doane (Neb.)
