SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU’s Angela Young earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University senior outside hitter Angela Young has been named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District® 7 volleyball team released on Thursday. The selection and announcement were made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

It’s the second straight year Young has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades and is one of nine selected to this year’s all-district team. Young now advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, where first and second team All-Academic honorees will be selected next month.

District 7 is made up of member schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC).

A native of Conde, S.D., and a 2016 graduate of Clarke High School, Young carried a 3.94 GPA in marketing and communications. With the 2020 season canceled due to COVID, Young finished her career with 773 kills and a .255 hitting percentage in 77 career matches.

In her final season on the court, Young earned 2019 All-NSIC first team honors leading SMSU with 420 kills, while recording a .248 hitting percentage. She also ranked third on the team with 251 digs, third with 21 service aces and was fifth in blocks with 35.

It’s the fourth straight year SMSU volleyball has had a first team Academic All-District honoree and the eighth since 2007.
