AMATEUR BASEBALL: A quality start

MARSHALL — After playing its 2020 season with limited fans, the Marshall amateur baseball team opened its 2021 campaign with a strong crowd. And Logan Terfehr gave them a lot to cheer about.

The Marshall starter threw a complete-game shutout, only allowing four hits and struck out 10 Raymond batters and the A’s defeated the Rockets 2-0 on Sunday at Legion Field.

Marshall manager Ryan Schwagel said it felt great to be out on the field again playing and added that Terfehr did a good job of attacking the strike zone early.

“It feels great; we had a great game and a lot of guys showed up for us and it’s just good to be on the field in a more normal season in early May. Last year was so goofy and this year we’ve started out on the right foot,” Schwagel said. “Logan was attacking the zone and threw lots of strikes. He threw a great game and you can’t ask any more out of a start from anybody, especially the first game of the year and they’re a good team. That was a big win for us.”

Terfehr added he relied on his fastball a lot throughout the game and occasionally mixed things up with the curveball.

“Mostly just locating fastballs,” Terfehr said. “That’s really all we did and then the occasional curveball, but mostly it was just locating fastballs.”

Both Terfehr and Raymond’s Alex Lotthammer (6 2/3 IP, 2R, 6H, 14 strikeouts) were dominant right from the start, as only one hit for each starter was allowed in the first four innings combined. Raymond got its first hit of the day in the top of the second and had runners in scoring position with two outs, but Terfehr got out of the inning with a strikeout to keep the Rockets off the board. Meanwhile, Marshall saw back-to-back innings with doubles by Zach Olson and Zach Olsen in the fourth and fifth frames but the A’s weren’t able to capitalize and things remained scoreless after five.

Marshall had another chance to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Doug Mead reached on an error and Olson connected on a single with one out. After a flyout, Jordan Mernaugh smacked a two-run double to give Marshall a 2-0 lead.

Raymond wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, and got runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Terfehr escaped the jam with a groundout before going 1-2-3 in the ninth to complete the shutout.

Olson led Marshall with two hits while Mernaugh added a hit and two RBI and Schwagel, Alex Thompson, Logan Tomasek and Olsen each had a hit.

Schwagel said their key adjustment on offense was just getting more at-bats and they were able to come up with the clutch hit later on.

“Just shaking the rust off, really. It’s our first game of the year, so it was about getting some at-bats in and seeing some pitches,” Schwagel said. “Lotthammer had a good start, we just figured him out and got one big hit and that’s all it took.”
