PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall boys basketball cruises past Worthington

WORTHINGTON — The No. 7 Marshall boys basketball team defeated Worthington 73-40 on Tuesday.

Marshall opened the game with a 9-2 lead before expanding it to a 14-point advantage at halftime at 31-17. MHS continued its momentum in the second half, going on a 12-0 run to start the frame before pushing its lead to 26 at 54-28 at the midway point on its way to the 73-40 final.

Josh Baker led Marshall with 19 points while Bryce Lance added 12 and Brevin Runia, Chase Douglas and Noah Wilts each had seven. Charlie Jacobson led in rebounds with six while Lance led in assists with five.

Marshall (10-1) will face the No. 1 ranked team in Class AA, Waseca (10-0) at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Marshall fell to the Bluejays 75-66 on Jan. 26.

Girls basketball

Canby 46,

Lakeview 45

COTTONWOOD — The Canby girls basketball team defeated Lakeview 46-45 on Tuesday.

Trailing Lakeview by one, Canby took the lead when McKenzie Ruether connected on a floater in the lane with 4.7 seconds remaining to ultimately give Canby the victory.

Hannah Jelen led Canby with 13 points while Kortney Leppke added 11, Aidyn Bruns had 10 and Ruether had eight. Leppke led in rebounds with eight while Bruns, Ryann Hansen and Jayla Hulzebos led in assists with two each.

Shelby Gravley led Lakeview with 16 points while Aubrey Kaczmarek added 10 and Savanna Louwagie and Kiana Imes each had eight. Gravley led in rebounds with 12 while Imes led in assists with five.

Canby (5-6) will face YME on the road on Friday at 7:15 p.m. while Lakeview (8-4) will face Pipestone Area on the road on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

TMB 63, YME 33

GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team fell to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 63-33 on Tuesday.

Shelby Mortenson led YME with 10 points while Ruby Bones added eight and Stella Schuler had four. Brylea Ruff led in rebounds with 11 while Hannah Stark, Ruff and Mortenson led in assists with one each.

Jordan Munson led TMB with 17 points while Maddi Langerock added nine and Lauren Zick had eight. Margaret Dolan led in rebounds with eight while Munson led in assists with three.

YME (2-9) will face Canby at home on Friday at 7:15 p.m. while TMB (8-3) will face CMCS at home on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Minneota 55,

SWC 46

EDGERTON — The Minneota girls basketball team defeated Southwest Minnesota Christian 55-46 on Tuesday.

Abby Hennen led Minneota with 33 points while McKenna Yost added six and Natalee Rolbiecki and McKenzie Tolk each had four. Abby Rost led in rebounds with nine while Abby Hennen and Rost led in assists with five each.

Minneota (12-0) will face YME next Tuesday at home at 7:15 p.m.

RRC 67, MCC 37

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team defeated Murray County Central 67-37 on Tuesday.

Karli Arkell led RRC with 23 points while Nicole Schroepfer added 11 and Lily Stavnes had 10. Arkell led in rebounds with 11 while Stavnes led in assists with four.

No MCC stats were available at press time.

RRC (8-3) will face HLO/Fulda on the road on Friday at 7:15 p.m. while MCC (1-11) will face SWC at home on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

CMCS 65, DB 26

PRINSBURG — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team fell to Central Minnesota Christian 65-26 on Tuesday.

Laney Bartunek led DB with eight points while Ella Johnson added five and Kate Dahl and Allison Estling each had four. Chelsie Husby and Johnson led in rebounds with six each while Bartunek led in steals with three.

DB (1-11) will face Montevideo at home on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Girls hockey

Marshall 9,

Prairie Centre 0

SAUK CENTRE — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Prairie Centre 9-0 on Tuesday.

Marshall jumped out to an early lead when Regan Loft scored 42 seconds into the game on the assist from Leah Schaefer before Schaefer found the back of the net on the assist from Kendal Beernaert to make it 2-0 after one.

Marshall kept things going on offense in the second period, with Loft getting one past the goaltender on the assist from Mia Wichmann 4:37 into the frame to make it 3-0. A few minutes later, Kalyn DeVlieger scored on an unassisted goal before Aubree Metheny found the back of the net on the assist from Olivia Lupkes to make it 5-0. Then with just under three minutes left in the frame, Kaitlyn Timm scored on the assist from Emelia Barker and Shelby Ormberg to push the advantage to 6-0 after two.

Marshall wasn’t done there, though, as it scored three more times in the third. Timm got an unassisted goal before completing the hat trick on the assist from Lily Verkinderen with 13 minutes left. DeVlieger then scored her second of the game on the assist from Metheny to bring it to the 9-0 final.

Marshall outshot Prairie Centre 42-12 on the game. Emma Klenken earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 12 saves.

Marshall (7-3) will face Minnesota River at home on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Wrestling

Pipestone

PIPESTONE — The Marshall wrestling team earned a pair of victories on Tuesday, defeating Pipestone Area 54-14 and Worthington 39-36.

Against Pipestone Area, Drew Chandler, Brett Regnier, Josh Kraft, Lucas Stelter, Kaidin Otto, Spencer Wambeke and Grant Louwagie won by forfeit, Dylan Louwagie won by fall and Tate Condezo and Tucker Fiene won by decision for Marshall.

Against Worthington, Brayden Ust, Dylan Louwagie, Condezo, Mitchell Bouwman and Grant Louwagie won by fall, Regnier won by injury default and Wambeke won by decision for Marshall.

Marshall will compete next on Thursday at home against Fairmont/MCW and St. James at 5 p.m.

United triangular

MONTEVIDEO — The Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle/Montevideo United wrestling team earned a pair of victories on Tuesday, defeating MAHACA 52-20 and Border West 56-21.

Against MAHACA, Kameron Sather, Avery Wittnebel, Trevon Johnson, Keaton Haas and Trey Teichert won by fall while Ethan Moravetz and Holt Larson won by decision, Landen Knoshal and Kadin Huntley won by forfeit and Dain Mortenson won by major decision for United.

Against Border West, Moravetz and Knoshal won by fall while Zander Clausen, Huntley, Mason McDougal, Wittnebel, Johnson and Teichert won by forfeit, Daniel Gunlogson won by decision and Mortenson won by tech fall for United.

United will compete next on Friday at BOLD at 5 p.m.
