SMSU wrestling back in action tonight at Parkside

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-0, 1-0 NSIC) returns to action today traveling to Kenosha Wis., going up against University of Wisconsin Parkside (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) in its second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual this season. The dual is slated to start at 8 p.m. in the De Simone Gym.

Series history

The series is held by Parkside with a 2-0 lead over SMSU, the first time the two wrestling programs met up was on Nov. 6, 2001, in Kenosha Wis., where SMSU lost 33-12. The next time these two would meet up wouldn’t be for another 16 years, where they met at a neutral site in Mankato Minn., on Jan. 6, 2018, where again Parkside defeated the Mustangs 32-12.

SMSU notes

SMSU was supposed to have their first home dual of the season last week against University of Mary, but due to COVID protocol the dual was canceled which will not be made up. The Mustangs a week before on Jan. 7 earned a clutch victory over No. 25 MSU Moorhead winning four straight bouts to close the match. Hayden Voxland won an 11-4 decision, Caden Steffen earned an 11-5 decision, while Jackson Ryan earned a close 5-3 decision to put the Mustangs within one point of MSU Moorhead. Heavyweight Jacob Dykes earned a take down in the second period and eventually earned a 4-1 decision to put the Mustangs up over the Dragons with a final score of 18-16. The Mustangs are bringing the same lineup that they had for MSU Moorhead to Parkside.

Head coach Jesse Nelson

Jesse Nelson is in his 14th season as head coach at SMSU in 2020-21. Nelson, the fourth coach in the program history, was hired on Aug. 22, 2007. Nelson, the 2013-14 NSIC Coach of the Year, has a career dual record of 87-102-1, including 35-62 in conference matches. During his tenure, Nelson has groomed 23 national qualifiers-including four two-time qualifiers and three three-time qualifiers-along with 13 All-NSIC honorees. Nelson has coached three NCAA All-Americans, including Justin Reinsma in both 2012 and 2013, Jacob Begin in 2015 and Cole Wilson in 2016.

Parkside notes

Parkside goes into Friday’s dual with a record of 0-2 (0-2 NSIC) on the season, falling to both Augustana and Northern State. The lineup will be led by senior Joseph Arroyo who was a Division II National Qualifier along with earning NWCA DII All-American. Redshirt Junior Job Ayala missed the 2019-20 season due to injury and looks to recreate his success from his 2018-19, season where he went 25 and 9 on the season. Corey Vangroll is in his fourth season as Parkside’s head coach, where last year he sent three wrestlers to the NCAA II Championships.
