PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls basketball takes out Huskies, 92-33

JACKSON — The No. 6 ranked Marshall girls basketball team dominated Jackson County Central, 92-33, in Friday’s Big South Conference matchup.

The Tigers were led offensively by Jordyn Hilgemann and Emily Meier, who finished with 23 and 22 points respectively. Megan Wegner added nine points for Marshall and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while Hilgemann and Lexie Bednarek each added four.

Bednarek paced the Tigers in assists with five. Bri Simpson, Corrin Naughton and Hilgemann each added four.

Next up for the Tigers is a matchup against Luverne on the road next Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Boys basketball

SWC 70, RRC 35

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team dropped to 1-2 on Friday after falling 70-35 to the visiting Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles (3-0).

Dominik Smith led the Falcons in scoring with 15 points, followed by Joe Strock with eight points to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds. Isaac Simonson added eight boards for RRC. Justin Kablunde paced the team in assists with four.

The Falcons will travel to Mountain Lake for their next game on Tuesday against Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at 7:15 p.m.

RTR 77,

MACCRAY 72

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team improved 2-1 on Friday after edging MACCRAY 77-72 at home.

Knights senior Brady Kienitz poured in 30 points to lead all scorers. Trenten Cavaness also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points, while Issac Strommer and Isaac Post added seven and eight points respectively for RTR.

Cavaness ended the night with a double-double after hauling in 13 rebounds to lead the team. Kienitz added nine boards, while Strommer finished with four. Kienitz and Strommer led the Knights in assists as well with five and four, respectively.

The Knights will look to make it two wins in a row when they take on Central Minnesota Christian on Thursday at home at 7:30 p.m.

WWG 58, MLA/C 40

WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team edged Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at home on Friday in a 58-40 final.

Hunter Lien was the lone Charger to reach double figures in scoring with 17 points in the win. Nathan Kuehl and Cole Vandewiele each added eight points for WWG.

Brady Ross, Ethan Mischke and Coltin Pilaczynski each grabbed six boards for the Chargers. Mischke added a team-high six assists as well.

The Chargers (2-1) will return to their home court on Tuesday to take on Windom Area at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday

Girls basketball

RTR 59, DB 23

TYLER — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team fell to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 59-23 on Thursday.

Kate Dahl led DB with seven points while Rachael Lund and Paige Conover each added three. Lund led in rebounds with 10 while Chelsie Husby led in steals with four.

Haley Muenchow and Ella Hesse led RTR with 11 points each while Kalleigh Carr added 10. Muenchow led in rebounds with 11 while Hesse and Alexis Schreurs led in assists with three.

DB (0-3) will face Ortonville on Monday at 7:15 p.m. while RTR (2-0) will face YME on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Canby 62,

MACCRAY 54

CANBY — The Canby girls basketball team defeated MACCRAY 62-54 on Thursday.

Hannah Jelen led Canby with 29 points while McKenzie Ruether and Aidyn Bruns each added 11. Maya Wente led in rebounds with nine while Jelen led in steals with six.

Canby (1-1) will face TMB on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

TMB 66, KMS 29

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team defeated Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 66-29 on Thursday.

Camille Dolan led TMB with 11 points while Jordan Munson added 10 and Jaysa Davis had nine. Davis led in rebounds with eight while Maddi Langerock led in assists with four.

TMB (2-0) will face Canby on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

HBC 71, WWG 38

WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team fell to Hills-Beaver Creek 71-38 on Thursday.

Abby Wiggins led WWG with 15 points while Isabel Klumper added 13 and Bethany Byers recorded six. No other WWG stats were available at press time.

WWG (2-1) will face Adrian on Monday at 7:15 p.m.

Boys basketball

MCC 51,

HLO/Fulda 47

OKABENA — The Murray County Central boys basketball team defeated Heron Lake Okabena/Fulda 51-47 on Thursday.

Chant Mitchell led MCC with 12 points while Blake Schmitz added 10 and Dylan Johnson had eight. Schmitz led in rebounds with 11 while Johnson, Schmitz and Colton Mitchell led in assists with three each.

Boys hockey

Minnesota River 9, Marshall 3

LE SUEUR — The Marshall boys hockey team fell to Minnesota River 9-3 on Thursday.

Marshall fell in an early deficit in the first period, as Minnesota River scored on a pair of goals from Brendan O’Keefe to make it 2-0. Marshall then got on the board in the opening minutes of the second, with Wyatt Boerboom finding the back of the net on the assist from Jared Reinsma to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Minnesota River responded with three straight goals to extend its lead to 5-1. Boerboom scored again later in the period, this time on the assist from Talan Plante, but Minnesota River got another goal to take a 6-2 lead going into the third period.

Marshall drew to within three with a goal from Justin Cavazos on the assist by Logan Deutz, but that was the closest it got, as Minnesota River scored three more times to earn the 9-3 victory.

Minnesota River outshot Marshall 35-30 on the game. Gavin Welsh recorded 26 saves in net for Marshall.

Marshall (0-3) will face New Ulm on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
