Mustang swimming team ready for meet today at St. Cloud State

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s swimming team returns to the pool today with a dual meet at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud. The dual gets underway at 5 p.m. inside the Halenbeck Hall Aquatic Center.

SMSU is 0-2 on the season, following losses last week to Minnesota State (205-73) and MSU Moorhead (143-78).

In the loss to MSU Moorhead on Saturday, SMSU recorded three first place finishes. Annika Freiburger led the way for the Mustangs capturing first place in the 800 yard freestyle with a time of 9:16.66, while also earning a second place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:20.48. She also finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:13.20.

SMSU’s MacKenzie Kallevig won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:38.86 and earned a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.84. Teammate Kendyl Near also recorded a first place time in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:16.69. Near also picked up a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.23.

SCSU, the two-time defending NSIC champion and the preseason pick to win the 2021 championship, is 0-1 on the season following a 187-111 loss at Minnesota State last Saturday.

Following today’s meet, SMSU continues action hosting MSU Moorhead on Jan. 23.
