PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls take first, boys second at BSC championships

REDWOOD FALLS — The Marshall boys and girls cross country teams wrapped up the regular season on Saturday at the Big South Conference Championships. Marshall was able to keep its momentum going with a first-place finish on the girls side and a second-place finish on the boys side.

On the girls side, Marshall took first with a team score of 24, followed by Waseca in second (45), St. Peter in third (76) and Worthington in fourth (104). The other conference teams competed in a separate race and results were not available at press time.

For Marshall, Bellamy Sukalski led the way with a second-place time of 19:28.07. Taleigha Bigler (19:40.75), Allyson Sample (19:42.97), Miracle Tucker (19:44.58), Anna DeGroot (20:36.66), Cameen McFarquhar (20:45.12) and Gracelyn Foster (20:45.60) took the 4th-9th spots, respectively, while Jersey Leysen took 11th with a time of 21:48.72 to round out their times.

On the boys side, Marshall took second with a team score of 40, followed by Waseca in third (50) and St. Peter in fourth (119). Worthington took first with a score of 32.

For Marshall, Owen Holmberg led the way with a second-place time of 16:31.89 while Zach Leibfried took fourth with a time of 16:59.59 and Josh Leibfried took ninth with a time of 17:24.57. Sam Deutz took 11th with a time of 17:29.85 while Ashton Schnaser took 14th (17:59.28), Ethan Bly took 16th (17:59.80), Landon Wherry took 18th (18:24.17) and Daniel Olin took 19th (18:38.54) to round out their times.

Marshall will compete next in the Section 2AA meet on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista.

Volleyball

Marshall 3,

Waseca 0

WASECA — The Marshall volleyball team defeated Waseca 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-8) on Saturday.

Jordyn Hilgemann led the way for Marshall with 10 kills while Emily Meier and Leah Jones each added six and Brooke Andries had five. Hilgemann led in digs with 12 while Caitlyn Christenson added 11 and Maysa Gillingham led in set assists with 27.

Marshall (2-0) will return home on Thursday to face Redwood Valley at 7:15 p.m.

TMB 3, RCW 0

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team defeated Renville County West 3-0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-8) to begin their season on Saturday.

Jadyn Lessman led the way for TMB with 13 kills while Kylie Hensch added 10. Margaret Dolan led in digs with seven while Maddi Langerock led in set assists with 29.

TMB (1-0) will face CMCS on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Friday football

DB 28, Canby 7

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd football team defeated Canby 28-7 to begin their season on Friday.

Micah Olson led the way for Dawson-Boyd with 84 rushing yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns while Jordan Hastad added 114 yards on the ground and a score.

Will Varcoe led the way for Canby with a touchdown.

DB (1-0) will face YME next Friday at 7 p.m. while Canby (0-1) will face Minneota on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Minneota 47,

MACCRAY 6

CLARA CITY — The Minneota football team defeated MACCRAY 47-6 to begin their season on Friday.

Jacob Hennen completed 12 of his 21 pass attempts for 172 yards and a touchdown while Conner Sik led in rushing with 82 yards on nine carries and a score. AJ Josephson added 61 rushing yards and a touchdown while Zack Fier had 36 yards and a touchdown and Hennen, Kade Lozinski and Joey Rybinski each added a score. Josephson led in receiving with 47 yards on two catches.

Minneota (1-0) will face Canby on Thursday at 7 p.m.

WWG 24,

Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 20

MORGAN — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove football team defeated Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 24-20 to begin their season on Friday.

Brady Ross led the way for WWG with 240 passing yards and three touchdowns while Gabe Krick added 70 yards on the ground. Ethan Mischke led in receiving with 160 yards on 11 catches and a score. Austin Parker led the defense with 13 tackles.

WWG (1-0) will face RRC next Friday at 7 p.m.

TMB 34, MVL 12

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton football team defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 34-12 to begin their season on Friday.

Ayden Horner led the way for TMB with 203 rushing yards on 17 carries and four touchdowns while Caden Anderson added 70 yards on the ground. Noah Swenhaugen threw for 97 yards and a touchdown while Christian Wendland had two catches for 50 yards and Matt Munson had a catch for 36 yards and a score.

TMB (1-0) will face MCC next Friday at 7 p.m.

MCC 35,

Sleepy Eye 12

SLEEPY EYE — The Murray County Central football team defeated Sleepy Eye 35-12 to begin their season on Friday.

Dylan Johnson led the way for MCC with 76 rushing yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns while adding 58 yards receiving and a touchdown as well as a kickoff return score. Blake Schmidt threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns while Chant Mitchell added 35 receiving yards and a score.

Kevin Garcia led MCC with 10 tackles.

MCC (1-0) will face TMB next Friday at 7 p.m.
