Marshall boys soccer takes down St. Peter, moves on to Section 2A semifinals

ST. PETER — After defeating Jordan in the Section 2A tournament opener on Monday, the Marshall boys soccer team faced a familiar opponent in the next round, taking on St. Peter. With their season on the line, Marshall was able to go toe-to-toe with St. Peter and outlast the Saints in a 4-3 victory in double overtime on Wednesday.

With the score tied 3-3, Marshall and St. Peter went into overtime, but neither team could capitalize in the first extra session, sending the game into a second overtime period. There, Marshall was able to strike first when Ivan Celedon scored to help them move on to the semifinal round with the 4-3 win. Celedon had a hat trick in the game.

The first half nearly went scoreless until Marshall was able to find the back of the net on a goal by Saw Ka with five minutes to go in the frame to take a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Marshall continued its momentum with a goal from Celedon just seven minutes into the frame to make it 2-0, but St. Peter responded with a goal of its own to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 26 minutes left.

After some back-and-forth play, St. Peter was able to tie things up, but Marshall had a timely response, as Celedon scored his second goal of the night to take the lead back at 3-2 with nine minutes left. With time winding down, St. Peter needed a spark and found it, scoring with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation to tie things up at 3-3 and send the game into overtime and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Marshall (6-2-3) will face Worthington on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
