SMSU tennis camp still on for August

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University head women’s tennis coach Jon Parker recently announced that the SMSU junior and adult camps scheduled for August at the Legion Field Tennis Courts in Marshal are still open for sign-up and include a reduced rate for selected individuals.

The discounts are for teachers, multi-family (3 or more), first responders and for individual who “bring a friend”. All of the discounts are for 25 percent off the total cost. This a great way to get outside, get exercise and learn more about the game of tennis.

The camps will be held Aug. 3-6 and will be divided into three separate sessions. Due to COVID-19 social distancing regulations, there will be no more than nine participants per instructor per court. Each camper will need to bring their own hand-sanitizer and face mask. Social distancing will be followed and there will be enough devices to pick up tennis balls without touching them directly. A free t-shirt will be giving to all campers.

All individuals must sign up no later than July 27 to participate in the camp. Go to smsutenniscamps.com to sign-up and for information.

The camp will be run by current SMSU head coach Jon Parker, who recently completed his first season as the Mustang head coach. Parker has been a successful head coach at both the collegiate and high school levels for more than 20 years, which includes winning six high school state championships. At the collegiate level, he served a very-successful at NCAA Division II Northeastern State University (Okla.), leading the program to a pair of NCAA Tournaments. Current and former SMSU players will also assist during the camp.

The Mini-Mustangs (ages 6 & up) camp will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with each group separated by age and ability. This camp is for beginners to intermediate who want to learn the game either for the first time or achieve a better understanding of the game. Campers will be divided according to age and ability. We will use low compression tennis balls and age and ability appropriate tennis curriculum.

The Mustang Tournament Tough Session (ages 11-18) will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. each day with lunch provided. This camp is for advanced players who participate in USTA and are a part of their high school varsity/sub-varsity tennis teams. Players will learn modern technique, point construction, and mental toughness training. Players will learn singles and double shot patterns and tactics. T/T session is divided into two times periods. The first time period will consist of drill, live feed and technical training. The second session will consist of singles and doubles live point play, match play and team tennis.

The Mustang Adult Session (ages 18 and up) will be held each day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The camp is set for beginners through advanced players will stroke production, live ball feeds, singles and doubles strategy. Training will be adjusted according to your present playing and conditioning level.
