SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: SMSU’s Wigand earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors
MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University junior track & field athlete Connor Wigand was named to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District® 7 Track & Field/Cross Country team announced on Friday.
The selection was made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Wigand will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, where first, second and third team All-Academic honorees will be selected next month.
Wigand, who competes for the track & field team, was one of 14 student-athletes in either track & field/cross country named to the team from District 7, which is made up of schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC).
A native of Manitowoc, Wis., Wigand has compiled a 3.69 cumulative GPA, while majoring in chemistry. He earned 2020 All-NSIC honors this winter finishing second in the shot put at the NSIC Championships with a toss of 16.62m. He also placed seventh at the NSIC Championships in the weight throw with a mark of 17.38m.
Wigand, who is also a member of the SMSU football team, is the fourth SMSU student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District® 7 honors this academic year. Volleyball player Angela Young, softball player Emma Grote and baseball player John Bezdicek each earned All-District honors earlier this year.
The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs.
