SMSU announces schedule changes for fall sports

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Department has released updated schedules for the upcoming 2020 Mustang football, soccer and volleyball seasons.

The schedule changes are due to the NCAA Division II Presidents Council announcement in May that reduces the maximum number of contests and dates of competition for the 2020-21 academic year as a result of financial impacts of COVID-19.

The fall schedules feature competition versus Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents only. The football schedule will be shortened to 10 games, the soccer schedule will feature 14 games, while the volleyball schedule will have 20 matches.

The SMSU football team will open the season on Sept. 12 at Northern State before hosting UMary on Sept. 19 for the first of five home games.

The SMSU soccer team will have its first game on Sept. 18 at Upper Iowa and will have its first of seven home games on Sept. 25 versus Minot State.

The Mustang volleyball team will open its season on Sept. 18 at Bemidji State and will opens its 10-match home schedule on Sept. 22 versus Augustana.

The SMSU cross country and golf teams will release their schedules later this summer.

The NSIC will also release the updated 2020-21 winter schedules later this summer.
