Area amateur baseball teams see busy weekend

MARSHALL — Baseball was seen all weekend in Minnesota, as amateur ballclubs have been given the go-ahead to play in their own state as long as they follow specific guidelines and get their ballpark approved by whoever is in charge of the stadium.

Some teams were able to have “exhibition” games at their home park, but many still traveled to South Dakota to get some games in.

Marshall A’s

VALLEY SPRINGS, S.D. — The Marshall A’s got their season started on Saturday, as they faced Brandon Valley (S.D.). Unfortunately for Marshall, it wasn’t able to get much going on offense, as the Rats defeated the A’s 13-3 in eight innings.

Jordan Mernaugh led the way for the A’s with a pair of hits and two RBI while Matt Hmielewski, King Blanchette, Nick Macchio and Drew Hmielewski each added a hit, with Drew picking up the final RBI.

Marshall’s next game is TBD.

Milroy Yankees

AURORA, S.D. — The Yankees played a doubleheader on Saturday night, facing Willmar and Forest Lake. Milroy defeated Willmar 11-8 before seeing their game against Forest Lake get suspended through eight innings tied at 11 due to darkness.

Against Willmar, Derek Rasmussen led the way for the Yankees with a 2 for 4 day at the plate, including a double and three RBI while Cody Greve added a triple and two RBI. Matt Bauer and Aaron Mathiowetz each added a hit and an RBI while Isaac Schmitt, Dylan Criquet-Danielson and Jackson Hughes each had an RBI.

Austin Deutz earned the victory on the mound, going 4 1/3 innings while allowing five runs on four hits and striking out six.

Against Forest Lake, Milroy was led by Mathiowetz, who went 2 for 5 with a home run and a double while collecting six RBI. Brian Dolan added three hits and an RBI while Rasmussen had a hit and a couple of RBI. Bauer and Greve each had a pair of hits to add to the Milroy effort.

Schmitt earned the start, going three innings while allowing 10 runs on three hits and striking out six. Ty Kemp tossed five innings of relief while allowing just one run on two hits and striking out seven.

The game, which started at 11 p.m., was suspended at 1:30 a.m. due to darkness. The Yankees’ next game is TBD.
