SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU hosts Augustana and Wayne State in final weekend of the regular season

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s basketball team (14-11, 9-11 NSIC) hosts Augustana (15-9, 11-9 NSIC) and Wayne State (16-10, 11-9 NSIC) in the final homestand of the regular season.

•SMSU will face Wayne State on Friday night, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off and will take on Augustana on Saturday, with tip-off slated for 4 p.m.

•This weekend is the second meeting between the two teams this season. SMSU split the last time out, defeating Augustana 60-55 on Jan. 3 and falling 79-62 to Wayne State, on Jan. 4, on the road.

•The Mustangs are coming off another split weekend after extending their winning streak to four games, with a 82-64 victory over Upper Iowa last Friday before falling 86-63 to Winona State on Saturday.

•SMSU will honor its two seniors during the weekend. On Friday, SMSU will recognize Taylor Bonestroo, while on Saturday Emily Buysse will be honored. Bonestroo is also a member of the SMSU tennis team and will miss Saturday’s game for a tennis match in Owatonna.

•During its recent four game winning streak, SMSU surpassed last years win total of 12 victories. SMSU is now one win shy of tying the most wins since the 2009-10 season when they finished 15-12. The last time SMSU won 16 games occurred when the 2004-05 team finished with 19 victories.

•With one more victory, SMSU would secure its first winning season since the 2009-10 team finished 15-12.

•With the victory over UIU last weekend, SMSU tied its conference win total from a season ago with nine. One more conference victory would give SMSU its highest win total in the NSIC since the 2002-03 season squad finished 12-6 in the NSIC and 21-10 overall.

•Junior guard Meleah Reinhart is leading the Mustangs in scoring with 14.7 ppg and has led the Mustangs in scoring in 10 games. Reinhart has also recorded the most games in double-digit scoring with 22 this season.

•Junior center Abuk Akoi leads the team in rebounding with 8.3 rpg. Akoi has led the team in rebounding in 14 games and earned her third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 10 points in the victory over Minnesota State on Jan. 11. Akoi is on a seven-game streak for leading the team in rebounding.

•Akoi tied her own school single-game record for most blocked shots (seven) versus Minnesota State on Jan. 11.

•Sophomore guard Jenna Borchers has connected on a team-high 61 3-pointers and leads the team in assists with 64.

•Borchers earned a career-high with 30 points over UMary on. Jan. 18. Borchers became the first Mustang to earn a 30-point game this season.

•Senior forward Caleigh Rodning has missed the last 19 games with an injury.

•SMSU is averaging 69.4 ppg, while opponents are averaging 66.2 ppg.

•SMSU is shooting 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line, and 79 percent the free-throw line and has a minus-0.2 rebounding margin.

•Senior Caleigh Rodning ranks second in free throws made with 386 and is 23 from tying Andrea Schreier (1997-2001) for the all-time record of 409. She also ranks fourth in free throw pct. (83.6) and sixth in free throws attempts (464). Rodning is also five rebounds shy of becoming the 11th in player in team history to record 600 rebounds.

•Junior Abuk Akoi moved to third in team history with 135 blocked shots. She is seven blocks behind Shelly Honermann (1997-01) who ranks second at 142.

•Junior Meleah Reinhart ranks eighth in free throw pct. (78.8) and 13th in 3-point field goals made (97).

•Junior Erin Baxter ranks sixth in free-throw percentage (79.6).

•Sophomore Jenna Borchers ranks third in three-point percentage (40.6) and 12th in three-pointers (104).

•Junior Sadie Stelter ranks seventh in 3-point field goals made with 131. Stelter also ranks 11th in free-throw percentage at 78.1.

Series history vs. Wayne State

•SMSU and Wayne State meet for the 57th time on Friday with WSC leading 39-18 with the first meeting during the 1991-92 season.

•WSC earned a 79-62 victory earlier this season on Jan. 4 in Wayne.

•WSC has won the last 21 games with SMSU’s last victory coming on Feb. 25, 2009, in Wayne, Neb.

•WSC has won 29 of the previous 31 games since the 2004-05 season. SMSU’s two victories during that span occurred on Jan. 12, 2008, and Feb. 25, 2009.

•WSC holds a 17-12 advantage of games played in Marshall. SMSU’s last home victory came during the 2004-05 season.

vs. Augustana

•Augustana leads the series 12-10 in games played in Marshall, but SMSU won last season, 74-71.

•Junior forward Erin Norling leads the team in scoring at 19.9 ppg, shooting a team-high 46 percent from the field. Norling is also recording a team-high 8.0 rpg.

•Junior guard Halley Busse has a team-high 53 3-pointers.

•Brent Pollari is in his second season as head coach with a 31-25 overall record and 20-22 in the NSIC.

•WSC is shooting 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 78 percent from the free throw line.

•WSC is averaging 77 points per game, while opponents average 72 points per game. WSC has a plus-3.7 rebounding margin.

Scouting Augustana

•Augustana is 15-9 overall and 11-9 NSIC.

•The Vikings are on a two-game losing streak after defeating Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State last weekend.

•Sophomore guard Vishe’ Rabb is scoring 14.2 ppg while senior guard Abby Hora averages 12.6 with a team-high 36 3-pointers.
