SMSU SWIMMING AND DIVING: SMSU closes first day of NSIC Championships in eighth place

BISMARCK, N.D. – The first day of the 2020 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship is complete with Southwest Minnesota State earning 15 points and currently in eighth place in the eight-team championship.

The four-day championship is being hosted by the University of Mary and held inside the Bismarck State College Aquatic & Wellness Center.

A total of four event finals took place on Wednesday night with the University of Sioux Falls leading the championship with 191 points. Defending conference champion St. Cloud State is in second place with 149 points.

SMSU had three individuals and two relay teams compete in the finals on Wednesday night. Natalie Bohnert earned five teams points with a 12th place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.41. MacKenzie Kallevig competed in the 50 yard freestyle and placed 22nd with a mark of 24.79, while Annika Freiburger finished in 27th in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:30.44.

SMSU had two relay teams compete in the 200 yard medley with Madison Hubert, Addi Schroeder, Bohnert and Kallevig picking up eight team points with a 13th place finish of 1:51.80. The relay team of Kristen Johnson, Freiburger, Gabriela Reis and Megan Nelson earned two points with a time of 2:06.06 to finish in 16th place.

Day two of the championship starts today at 10 a.m. with trial sessions, while the finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. Today will have the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 IM, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, the one-meter diving competition and the 400 medley relay.

The top three finalists in each individual event and top two finalists in each relay event will be recognized as NSIC All-Conference during the meet.
