SMSU ATHLETICS: SMSU to hold NSIC ‘It’s a Slam Dunk – Don’t Drive Drunk’ campaign on Friday

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University will be hosting the eighth annual “It’s a Slam Dunk — Don’t Drive Drunk” on Friday when the Mustangs host Wayne State College. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

The “It’s A Slam Dunk, Don’t Drive Drunk” campaign, which started in 2013, will commemorate Drake Bigler, the five-month-old son of SMSU head men’s basketball coach Brad Bigler, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2012.

On Friday night, SMSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members will be collecting signatures from fans committing to not to drive drunk. Branded key chains and wristbands will be handed out to fans that pledge to join in this initiative.

SMSU has also partnered with the Marshall Police Department and the Lyon Country Sheriff Department who will both be in attendance to help raise awareness and educate on the dangers of drunk driving.

During designated basketball weekends in the months of January and February, NSIC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members will be collecting signatures from fans pledging not to drive drunk.

Over the past seven years, NSIC SAAC members have collected more than 55,000 signatures from fans pledging not to drive drunk. The NSIC encourages fans to support this effort and to always drive responsibly.
