PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall hockey earns sweep against Fairmont

FAIRMONT — The Marshall boys and girls hockey teams picked up victories on the road against Fairmont on Thursday, with the boys team winning 6-3 and the girls team winning 3-0.

Boys hockey

Marshall 6,

Fairmont 3

FAIRMONT — The Marshall boys hockey team scored a pair of goals in each of the three periods on Thursday night, defeating Fairmont 6-3.

Facing an early 1-0 deficit, Marshall closed the first period with goals by Jaden Gannott and Jared Reinsma.

Fairmont tied the game at 2-2 before Tristan VanDeVere scored the next two goals to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Fairmont would score once more in the second to cut Marshall’s lead to 4-3 with one period remaining.

Marshall pushed the margin back up to two in the third period, as VanDeVere scored again to complete a hat trick. Bryson Whyte added an insurance goal to make the final score 6-3.

The Tigers finished with 56 shots on goal in the game, while Marshall goalieDominik Caspers finished the game with 15 saves.

Marshall (13-6) will travel to Redwood Valley on Tuesday.

Girls hockey

Marshall 3,

Fairmont 0

FAIRMONT — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Fairmont 3-0 on Thursday.

After a scoreless first period, the Tigers got on the board in the second on a goal from Kaitlyn Timm.

Timm added her second goal of the night in the third period on a power play, with an assist from Leah Schaefer. Schaefer also set up the third goal of the night for Marshall, passing the puck to Tessa Gannott for a goal.

Emma Klenken recorded a shutout in the net for the Tigers.

Marshall (9-9-1) will host Waseca on Jan. 24. The Tigers were originally scheduled to travel to Windom today, but that game has been postponed due to weather.

Boys basketball

Marshall 55,

SF Lincoln 39

SIOUX FALLS – The Marshall boys basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to defeat Sioux Falls Lincoln 55-39 on Thursday.

Matt Hmielewski led the way for the Tigers with 18 points and five rebounds. Noah Puetz added 12 points in the win, while Bryce Lance finished with 10 points.

Marshall (14-1) is scheduled to host Waseca on Saturday.

MINNEOTA – Minneota used a strong second half to defeat Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 68-49 on Thursday.

Four Vikings scored in double digits, led by Logan Sussner with 18 points and 26 rebounds. He also recorded seven assists and eight steals in the win.

Cale Sorenson added 15 points for Minneota while Jacob Citterman recorded 11 points and Alex Saltzer scored 10 points.

Minneota (7-6) will host Ortonville on Monday.

Avery Bartunek led DB with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Lakeview (11-3) is scheduled to face Red Rock Central on Saturday at the R/A Facility while DB (0-12) will trael to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Thursday.
