PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Klenken has career night in net, Tigers earn 3-3 tie against Willmar
WILLMAR — There are nights when a hockey goalie is busy throughout a game and there are nights when a goalie doesn’t get into the action much over the course of a game.
Thursday night was one of the busier nights Marshall junior goalie Emma Klenken will have in her career, as she saved 63 shots on goal en route to a 3-3 tie against Willmar. Her statline included saving 32 of 33 shots in the third period alone.
After Willmar took an early lead almost eight minutes into the game, the Cardinals held on to their lead until five minutes into the second period. That’s when Emelia Barker and Tessa Gannott scored within 25 seconds of each other to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, thanks to assists from Kaitlyn Timm and Leah Schaefer, respectively.
Willmar responded to tie the game on a power play goal midway through the second period.
Two minutes into the third period, Marshall retook the lead on an unassisted goal by freshman Regan Loft.
Marshall held onto the lead until the final minute of regulation, as Bailey Olson of Willmar scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Each team had chances to win the game in overtime, but the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Marshall (1-1-1) will travel to Worthington on Tuesday.
