SMSU VOLLEYBALL: No. 9 SMSU drops road match to MSU on Saturday

MANKATO — The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team (11-5, 5-3 NSIC) suffered its third consecutive conference loss at the hands of Minnesota State (11-5, 5-3 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in a sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) at the Taylor Center.

The Mustangs were restricted to a .087 hitting percentage with 33 kills but were thwarted by attack errors with 23 in the match. The Mavericks hit .268 with 42 kills and were led by Morgan Olson and Jessica Nelson with 13 kills in the match.

The Mustangs were led by junior outside hitter, Angela Young, who recorded 11 kills. Mustang defense was led by Rachel Fink and Payton Hjerleid with seven digs each and Emma Thomssen recorded 13 assists.

No. 9 SMSU will return to action with a 6 p.m. road match at No. 15 Wayne State on Tuesday in Wayne, Neb. The Mustangs return home for a weekend homestead, opening with a 6 p.m. match hosting Bemidji State on Friday, and a 2 p.m. match versus Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, in the PE Gym.
