SMSU SWIMMING AND DIVING: SMSU selected eighth in NSIC preseason poll

BURNSVILLE — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s swimming & diving team was picked to finish eighth in the annual Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ poll released on Thursday.

SMSU is in its first season of competition since reinstating the program in May of 2018. SMSU head coach Marty Wahle has nine athletes on the 2019-20 roster.

St. Cloud State was the top choice in the poll earning 49 points and seven first place votes, followed by Minnesota State with 42 points and one first place vote. Sioux Falls was selected third followed by Augustana, UMary, MSU Moorhead, Northern State and SMSU.

St. Cloud State’s Chelsea Gehrke was named the NSIC Preseason Swimmer of the Year while teammate Alyssa Doherty earned NSIC Preseason Diver of the Year honors.

SMSU freshman swimmer Natalie Bohnert and freshman diver Megan Nelson were named “Athletes to Watch” for the 2019-20 season.

SMSU will open the 2019-20 season on Oct. 11, with a dual at Minnesota State. SMSU’s first home dual is Oct. 12 versus Iowa Lakes Community College.

The NSIC Swimming & Diving Championship will be held on Feb. 12-15, 2020, at the BSC Aquatic Center in Bismarck, N.D.
