PREP FOOTBALL: Tigers to wrap up regular season on the road against Jordan

MARSHALL — The Marshall football team battled the elements and a tough Waseca opponent last week before coming away with another key victory in a 27-8 final.

The Tigers piled up 356 total yards of offense against the Bluejays. Konnor Aufenthie led the way with 140 passing yards and a touchdown while Gabe Raini rushed for 118 yards and a pair of scores and added a receiving touchdown. Bryce Lance led in receiving with 99 yards.

Defensively, Marshall held Waseca to 179 total yards, including just 67 passing yards.

Coming off last week’s win, Marshall coach Terry Bahlmann felt they were able to do some good things in both halves on both sides of the ball and keep Waseca at bay throughout the night.

“It was a good win against good competition. I thought the play right before the half was huge, the drive that we put together in our two minutes and took the lead going into halftime. I thought defensively the first half, we bent a lot but we still protected our end zone and kept them out of it,” Bahlmann said. “In the second half, we came out and played more our style of defense and got calmed down a little bit and played well and our offense started to take over. Offensively in the first half, field position really hurt us and it seemed like we were inside our own 20 or 15 every time.”

Tonight, the Tigers will hit the road one final time as they close out the regular season against Jordan, with kickoff being slated for 7 p.m. Last year, Marshall faced the Hubmen to wrap the regular season with a perfect record on the line and unfortunately came up just short on the final play of the game in a tough loss. Now, Jordan enters the final week with a 6-1 record and are coming off a 39-12 victory against Worthington last week. Bahlmann said last year’s loss still is fresh in their minds and they know it’s going to another tight battle to close their schedule.

“They’re a throwing team; last year we were in the same spot, 7-0 and coming off a couple of big wins and went to Jordan on a Wednesday and got beat on the last play of the game,” Bahlmann said. “That’s still fresh in the kids’ minds and our minds and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready to go. They’re coming in with one loss similar to last year, so it should be a great game.”

The Hubmen are led by senior quarterback Bryce Sievers as well as wide receivers Ryan Samuelson, Jarrett McDermid, Wil Muelken and Hunter Bedney and running backs Macauley Bartells, Reihle Murray and Trent Rasmussen.

Bahlmann added that with it being a short week and only having two days to prepare, they’re turning their focus on getting healthy and working on Jordan’s scheme and getting ready on defense.

“With a short week, it’s a challenge because there’s not time to put a lot of new things in, it’s just about getting healthy and working on Jordan’s scheme,” Bahlmann said. “They have an odd front most of the time and defensively, they’re a no huddle spread team, so with a couple of days to prepare, we’re spending most of our time getting ready on defense.”
