SMSU SOCCER: SMSU advances win streak with victory over MSUM

MOORHEAD — The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (5-1, 3-1 NSIC) advanced its three-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory over MSU Moorhead (3-2-2, 1-2-1 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon at Nemzek Soccer Field.

This is the first time the Mustangs have had three consecutive conference victories since 2014.

Abbey Hoisington was the first for the Mustangs to score in the 10th minute off an assist from Alex Lotts. Erin Fisher, leading scorer for the Mustangs, scored in 33rd minute off an own goal deflection.

SMSU held the 2-0 lead until well into the second half when MSUM’s McKenzie Ickert scored, her second goal on the season, from Jennifer Barnes, to restrict the Mustangs from their third consecutive shutout.

Amanda Haimes advances her record to 5-1 between the posts with a season-high six saves.

Alli Miskowiec led the Mustangs with three shots, two of them on goal. The Dragons out-shot the Mustangs, however, with a 13-to-8 advantage, as Kate Weigum led the Dragons with two shots, both of them on goal.

SMSU (5-1, 3-1 NSIC) returns home to face Minnesota Crookston at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4., and Bemidji State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6., at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
