PREP WRESTLING: Marshall wrestler recovering after surgery last week

MARSHALL – Marshall seventh-grader and member of the Tigers’ Junior Varsity wrestling team Collin Klenken is currently recovering after an injury led to emergency surgery last weekend.

According to the Marshall Area Wrestling Association Facebook page, Klenken was airlifted to Sioux Falls late Friday night to have surgery after a large blood clot was found on the surface of his brain. On Sunday, Klenken was released from the hospital after a successful surgery and clear CT scans.

Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said it was a scary situation for their team and the Marshall community, but is extremely glad that Collin is ok and they’re doing everything they can to support him and his family.

“A lot of the guys didn’t know until later on in the weekend, probably by the time he was home on Sunday. They had a few questions and we talked it over on Monday and told them everything is going to be fine,” Bouwman said. “They’re just really rallying around him. They got cards that they’ve been sending, they’ve been talking with him and taking a look at his scar; everything’s going good, Collin’s in really good spirits and the guys are there for him and I think he knows that. Bonding together as a team.”

Klenken is expected to make a full recovery and will be able to return to school. While Klenken won’t be able to compete or practice the rest of the season, Bouwman and the rest of the team is excited to get him back on the sidelines and cheer on his teammates.

“We’re excited to get him back,” Bouwman said. “He gets to come back and hang out, he doesn’t get to wrestle anymore this year but he’ll come back and hang out with the guys and still be a part of the team and that’s what the guys are looking forward to.”
