PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: Tigers take second at Schwan’s Cup Tournament
Marshall gets tripped up against Chisago Lakes in championship of American Open Division
BLAINE – After earning a 4-1 victory over Green Bay Area on Thursday, the Marshall girls hockey team advanced to the American Open Division Championship of the Schwan’s Cup Tournament, where it would square off against Chisago Lakes. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Wildcats broke open the offense – highlighted by a pair of hat tricks from Jenna Lawry and Danielle Burgen – and took home first place in the division with an 8-0 victory on Friday at Ridder Arena.
Chisago Lakes quickly jumped out of the gates to start, as Lawry found the back of the net 6:03 into the first period. The sophomore forward wasn’t done there, as she added her second goal of the night just 41 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead before a Burgen goal later in the first pushed Chisago Lakes’ advantage to 3-0 after one.
In the second, Burgen found her second of the afternoon 2:30 into the frame before Lawry connected with the back of the net to complete the hat trick and make it 5-0. Burgen quickly followed suit with her teammate and got her third goal of the game near the midway point of the second to extend the Wildcat lead to 6-0 before Malia Mckinnon scored a few minutes later to make it 7-0 after two.
Maddi Klun would add a goal late in the third to bring it to the 8-0 final and a victory for the Wildcats.
Chisago Lakes outshot Marshall 51-13 on the game. Emma Klenken recorded 43 saves in net for the Tigers.
Marshall (10-4-2) will face Minnesota River on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.
