WINDOM – The Tigers are one win away from the state tournament.

Marshall defeated Rewood Valley 3-1 (25-10, 19-25, 25-9, 25-11) to clinch the Section 3AA South subsection title and move on to the Section 3AA Championship.

After winning the first set comfortably, Marshall faced some struggles in Set 2, ultimately dropping the set. Marshall coach Dan Westby said after the match that his team just had to relax going into the third set.

“Things were relatively easy in Set 1,” Westby said. “Whenever you deal with a situation like that (in Set 2), it can be difficult to regain focus and remember what got you into that situation. We just had to relax.”

Marshall was able to refocus and take control of the last two sets to earn the four-set victory.

Bria Morris led the Marshall offensive attack with 19 kills. Paige Andries added 13 kills in the win, while Logan Sherman recorded 12 kills.

Rachel Schwarz kept the Marshall offense moving with 28 set assists, with Sherman adding 19 assists.

Mia Schnaible recorded a team-high 16 digs and Erica Jones tallied 12 digs.

With the win, Marshall advances to the Section 3AA Championship on Saturday night, where they will face Section 3AA North subsection champion Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta. Marshall and MA/CA have not faced each other this season, but it will be a rematch of last year’s Section 3AA Championship.

Marshall defeated MA/CA in five sets last year, and Westby is expecting another tough test on Saturday night.

“It was a hard-fought match, and we’re bracing for the same from them again this year,” Westby said. “They have a lot of kids back from that team and so do we. It should be a good, hard-fought match.”
