PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Panthers use strong first half to defeat Knights

TYLER – A fast start and pressure defense helped the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers cruise past the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights, 74-43.

The Panthers jumped all over the Knights early with their press. TMB’s Evelyn Dolan scored the team’s first six points and had 12 points four minutes into the game.

“She did a nice job,” TMB coach Derek Ashbaugh said. “Evy did a nice job of running to the rim. Orr girls did a phenomenal job of finding her. We had a lot of girls that got layups tonight. I’m not sure how many assists we ended up with, but we did an incredible job of sharing the basketball.”

The Panthers led 17-0 with 13:05 left in the first half before RTR got on the board.

“We just started intense,” Ashbaugh said. “We got after them and forced some turnovers. I think the biggest thing was our girls did a nice job of not settling for jumpers. We had a bit of a lull there when they got back into it. RTR plays incredibly tough. No matter the score they are going to play tough. We had to make sure we matched their intensity.”

Following the basket the Knights went on a 12-6 run to trim TMB’s lead to 23-14. Ashbaugh said that RTR is known for creating turnovers and that’s what they did during that stretch.

“They are good at creating turnovers,” Ashbaugh said. “We didn’t do a good job of taking care of the basketball. They had a couple steals and got some baskets. They were able to break our press a couple times and get layups.”

Once the Knights got it back within single digits the Panthers followed with a 10-0 run to open up a 33-14 lead. The Panthers led the Knights 50-25 at halftime.

“We had way too many turnovers,” RTR coach Steve Krause said. “We didn’t handle the ball very well. Our passing was very poor. We’ve come a long ways and we just took a huge step backwards tonight.”

The Panthers started the second half, much like they started the first half. They went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 60-25 to diminish any home that the Knights may have had of a second half comeback.

Dolan finished the game with 28 points for the Panthers. She also grabbed eight rebounds and recorded seven steals.

Kaylee Kirk recorded a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 assists. Sydney Lanoue finished with nine points and six steals.

RTR’s Tina Haroldson finished with a team-high 20 points. Catherine Vogt finished with nine points.

With the win the Panthers improved to 3-1. They’ll be back in action on Friday against Yellow Medicine East.

The loss drops the Knights to 3-3 overall. They’ll hit the road on Friday to take on the Minneota Vikings.
