Local news important for civic engagement and connecting community

This past month of October, National Newspaper Week was sponsored by the Newspaper Association Managers (NAM) to promote the vital role newspapers play in informing, empowering, and uniting our communities. Their theme this year was the importance of local journalism. According to NAM, local journalism brings stories to light that national outlets often overlook school board decisions, city council debates, neighborhood events, and local heroes. City of Marshall leadership has taken some time to discuss the importance of communications and noted the importance of local news ...

Students encouraged to be actively involved in activities

The following letter to the editor is the response from Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams to the writer’s letter that published on Oct. 30. To the editor: Thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. We appreciate your interest in our students and school programs. At Marshall Public Schools, we encourage all students to be actively involved in school and extracurricular activities. The photo you are referring to includes all our students in a football program in grades 9-12 with their coaches, not just our varsity team. Research consistently shows ...

Return back to the basic principles

Once upon a time, there was a country called the United States of America founded upon the basic principles of freedom, liberty and prosperity. Because of these principles, granted to each of us by our creator, the founders, George Washington, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin and others, met in Philadelphia in May 25 thru September 17, 1878, to revise the Articles of Confederation, however, after much debate they agreed rather than revising the Articles to abolish them and create a new frame of government. On June 21, 1788, the Constitution along with the first 10 Amendments, known ...

How about cutting back on football team?

To the editor: I saw an awesome photo in the Marshall Independent of the Marshall Tiger Football Team. I was, however, flummoxed by the astounding number of players. I think I counted 68. There were what seemed like 15-20 coaches and assistants. Is it the District’s DEI program that necessitates the equity and inclusion of so many students, many of whom didn’t appear physically competitive to play the sport. Sixty eight players to fill 22 positions and play 8 conference games? Shoes, helmets, two or three sets of jerseys, pads, insurance? I recall Coach Pete had two assistants and ...

Open letter to U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach

To the editor: Some questions: The Big Beautiful Bill sacrificed affordable healthcare on the altar of tax cuts for the wealthy. Why did you support this? As an attorney, what is your opinion of the Trump administration destroying Caribbean boats and sailors in violation of national and international law? As a Catholic, why aren’t you following the guidance of the Vatican and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding immigrants? As an opponent of Obamacare, what is your detailed plan to replace it? Please broadcast your responses so individual constituents will not ...

Long retrieves

There must have been just the right number of pellets held tight enough in the yellow 20-gauge shell to connect with the late-flushing rooster in the group of more than a dozen tucked into the grass surrounded by the golden corn fields still waiting to be harvested. The bird fluttered and toppled a good distance away to my right as the remainder of the hens and roosters scattered to my left. I pegged a gray clump of grass a few yards in front of the crash-landing site and was just about to call my lab, Ole, over to begin the search after his switchbacking excitement of putting up the ...
