What if we

We are creatures of habit, aren’t we?

As I begin this column, let me say I’ve noticed I’m a creature of habit. When I review my day’s activities, there is a bit of repetitiveness. Without going into details, please know I am suddenly realizing I’m a certified habit infused human. There’s some comfort in these personal habits, but is it necessary they should be so ingrained in me?

Therefore, I am turning another page in The History of Ron, and I’ll try to do things differently. Let’s consider a few ideas for bursting our habit bubble.

Do you find yourself always driving on the same roads or streets? What if we all broke that habit and investigated a new route? Maybe we’ll see new scenery or experience a quieter ride. You can find that new route by using your favorite technology or, of course there’s always that good old paper map!

What if you sampled a different wine? If you traditionally have that California Chardonnay, try a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Are you a sweet moscato wine lover? Pour yourself a glass of a dry Chenin Blanc.

Ah, you’re a beer lover! What if you switched your usual Stella Artois lager for a Fulton Sweet Child of Vine IPA? That takes you from a mildly sweet brew to a mildly bitter brew — either way, you’re onto excellent beers.

When’s the last time you tasted a new cocktail? A Rob Roy ranks as one of my top five cocktails, but maybe I should try a Margarita! That actually sounds darn interesting! After all, it’s five o’clock somewhere, right?

Do you find yourself wearing the same clothes over a week’s time? I’ll bet your closet has some good options for you, and is inviting you to break your clothing habit.

How about that cup of coffee you enjoy? Is it always a latte? Why not try a mocha? The two cups of coffee differ only slightly, and when you try the mocha, delve into its history. You’ll find it interesting.

Of course, there’s always my habitual coffee — black and dark!

Most of us focus on one genre of novel, correct? Are you a cozy reader? What if you stretched your literary boundaries and entered the world of historical fiction? Like mysteries? Well, there just might be a good old western book waiting for you. Give it a try!

Do you find yourself ordering the same plate of food when dining out at a restaurant? I am guilty of this, and it’s hard to change that habit. However, during my next outing, I’m going to order a dish of Pad Thai. I’ll find out the flavor of those fried noodles, and just might discover I enjoy them.

Yup, we’re all creatures of habit. However, I encourage you to take the road less traveled. You never know what surprises await you — maybe you’ll start a whole new set of habits!

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!

Cheers!
