TextMyGov — a new tool

Lyon County recycling residents have a new tool to help keep them on schedule with curbside recycling pickup or other announcements regarding recycling in the county. The county is offering TextMyGov, which will send you a text to remind you of recycling pickup weeks or send you general recycling information. It can also assist us in reaching you if there are changes to the schedule due to weather issues or even if the recycling hauler is running late to issues such as a truck breakdown.

If you have received a text in the past from your doctor’s office or your dentist’s office, you are already familiar with how this program works. In order to sign up, residents will need to text LyonRecycle to the following number: 91896. Residents will receive a message back stating that you are signed up for the notifications. This service will only allow residents to receive an alert notification. It cannot be used to text the county back.

We are also available at the Environmental Department or the Lyon County Landfill to help you with your recycling or disposal questions. The office, including the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, is open Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30pm. No appointments are necessary unless you are a business. Businesses who need to dispose of items will need an appointment. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is open one Saturday a month and it is usually the second Saturday of each month.

Please note: the Household Hazardous Waste Facility will be closed to the public February 2-3 for flooring repairs. No items including mattresses will be accepted during this time. The general phone number for the facility is (507) 532-8210. Recycling, including mattress/box spring, shredded paper, books, car seats, needle disposal and residential recycling should call (507) 532-1307 with questions.

The Lyon County Landfill is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m.-noon. No appointment is necessary. For those residents who are self-hauling, please check into the office when you arrive at the landfill. Please remember if you are using a dump trailer to have the battery fully charged before coming to the landfill. The general phone number for the landfill is (507) 865-4615.

If you are a curbside recycler, the recycling pickup calendar was mailed out the end of November 2022 and can be found inside the newsletter that came out from the Environmental office. It is also located online on the Lyon County website at https://www.lyonco.org/departments/environmental/residential-recycling . Remember to have your cart out the night before recycling pickup and please make sure that it is positioned at least 3 feet away from other objects including your trash cart. Please remember to give the recycling hauler all day to get around to everyone’s address. We are now servicing over 7,000 addresses each recycling week in Lyon County.

We are excited to be able to order more 95-gallon recycling carts. In 2022, we exchanged or fixed over 600 recycling carts and dropped off carts to 65 residents who never recycled before! The 65-gallon carts that were purchased used over 12 years ago are starting to wear out. The most common problem with recycling carts is a broken lid. We perform these exchanges free and moving up to a larger 95-gallon recycling cart does not cost any more than a 65-gallon recycling cart. If you have a cart that needs repair or would like a larger cart, please give us a call.

Lyon County is also servicing 13 recycling drop sites for residential use. These drop sites are for rural recyclers or apartment recyclers that do not have curbside cart pickup. There are cardboard only containers at several of the sites as well. Please remember to flatten your cardboard to save space for the next resident who will be using the drop site for their recycling. Please remember to remove all packing materials from cardboard boxes. Styrofoam and plastic wrap or bubble wrap is never recycled through curbside or drop sites. Rigid Styrofoam can come to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for free and plastic wrap can be brought to Walmart. Thank you for all of your effort!
