On the Porch

The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on October 20, 1922:

The Misses Martha Rathjens and Elizabeth Gray will be hostesses this evening at a Halloween party entertaining several girl friends at the home of Martha Rathjens.

Returns of the football game on Saturday may be had at Osweiler’s Drug Store. Mr. Osweiler states that he will get returns on all ten games by wire at the end of the game.

Mr. H. Tholen has moved his family and household goods from Minneota to Marshall and has secured living apartments in the Bruce flat. Mr. Tholen is employed at the Powell Auto Co.

G.B. Lowe is spending this week in Minneapolis together with other members of the Olson Bros. stores company, who are meeting with the representatives of wholesale dealers and purchasing stocks for the Olson stores.

The City council has recently received the $77,000 for state re-imbursement on paving laid on the trunk highways through this city. The abutting property owners are to be given credit for the amount of the re-imbursement due in each case and the present unpaid balance will be distributed in assessments over the remaining period of ten years.

George DeReu of the University of Minnesota spent the weekend at the home of his mother in this city.

On Wednesday morning at the Holy Redeemer church in this city Mrs. Hattie Tegels and Mr. Frank Theobald were united in marriage. Rev. Fr. Carlin officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Theobald were the attendants.

Mrs. Ruby Ledward and Miss Henrietta Addison, instructor in piano, were in Canby on Thursday evening where Mrs. Ledward with Miss Addison as piano, entertained the members of the Music Club of that city with several numbers.

There will be a program and basket social at the Burchard school house on Halloween Oct. 31st. Every one invited and all ladies bring a basket. Don’t forget the date.

The photograph featured this week is the District 49 Burchard one-room schoolhouse. The building is owned and managed by the Balaton Area Historical Society. The school is located next to the Balaton Area History Center.
